My state's OBD inspection only uses pins 2,4,5 and 16 for data in our yearly OBD inspection. Trying to find out which pin transmits the actual CEL (MIL) code.

1.-
2.Bus positive Line of SAE-J1850
3.-
4.Chassis ground
5.Signal ground
6.CAN high (ISO 15765-4 and SAE-J2234)
7.K line of ISO 9141-2 and ISO 14230-4
8.-
9.-
10.Bus negative Line of SAE-J1850
11.-
12.-
13.-
14.CAN low (ISO 15765-4 and SAE-J2234)
15.L line of ISO 9141-2 and ISO 14230-4
16.Battery voltage

This can be deleted. My problem is with the ECM itself.

The CEL in the gauge pod comes off the ECU itself (pin 18 going to ground). On the OBD port, it's probably lines 12 (SCI TX) & 13 (SCI RX) that are used to poll the ECU, as those also go to the SRS and TCU modules. ABS is across 7 (with ECU) and 9.

The OBD follows a standard, that's why any reader can poll the ECU. It's the ancillary stuff like SRS, Tranny and Body modules that are propriety to the manufacturer and why you have to pay big bucks for a Consult-II to poll them. If your shop can't read the basic info off the OBD port, then take it to another shop.

Just realized that is specific to a 2001. Here's the 2000 pinout.
1: 12v (batt)
2:
3:
4: SCI RX
5: SCI TX
6:
7:
8: ABS (ground this on a 2000 to pull codes)
9:
10: K-Line (ABS here too)
11:
12: Signal Ground
13: Chassis Ground
14:
15:
16:

What I was looking for as it turns out is a list of what my state checks for during the OBD test. Which are the NON-Continuous ones below plus possibly a few others. Need to find out what others.

Continuous:Misfire, Fuel System, Comprehensive Components
Non-Continuous:Oxygen Sensor, Heat Oxygen Sensor, Catalyst Efficiency, Evaporative Emissions System, EGR System, Secondary Air System, PCV System

We are aloud to have up to 2 of them in a "NOT READY" status. Otherwise you fail automatically.

Muadeed, I spoke to the KEN, the EPA inspection GURU. WOOHOO...lol. He's supposed to be who Mechanics in Illionis call for inspection questions/answers. According to him this state inspections require pins 2,4,5 and 16. I misinterpreted that to mean only 4 checks were being done instead of many checks over 1 or a combination of the 4 pins.

I've an OBD reader for my laptop that will show that info, but it is not with me right now. I'll poke it tonight and see what it says for Illanoy.
