New-to-me '00 with 215k...what to tackle first

So after shopping CL for a while in a mostly brand-agnostic search for a 4x4 rig with a five-speed transmission, I picked up a fairly clean '00 XTerra with 214k on the clock, purchased from the third owner. The second owner had it from 30k to over 200k and obviously had maintenance done but I don't have any records, so I'm left to assume that it's in need of everything on the schedule.

It does seem to run fine, although the knock sensor code is present (no SES light, though) and it could use an alignment.

I'm thinking that I'm probably going to bite the bullet and get a local shop to handle the probably-deferred maintenance, and it seems like the list should be:

- timing belt
- tensioner
- water pump
- thermostat
- fan/alternator & compressor belts
-camshaft oil seal
- crankshaft oil seal

- plugs, cap, toro, wires

- full fluid change -- coolant, diff, and trannsmission (the oil is fresh, as it was changed the day before I bought the rig)

Should I have them replace the knock sensor at the same time--are they going to be getting into the same spot in the engine bay?
On some of the timing belt discussions, I saw mention of a couple of coolant hoses that should also be replaced at the same time--should these be on the list?

I have to admit that in theory I'd rather wait until things warm up and do this stuff myself, but without room to get the rig into my garage and a timing belt of unknown age, it seems like a better bet to pay someone else to get things done. I'm trying to resist the urge to start modding things, but I'm guessing I'll want to add some LED auxilliary lighting and maybe sliders and skid plates before too long. In a perfect world, I'd also replace the tires--I don't think they're doing me any big favors--but they've got a bit too much life left to justiy that yet.

Welcome into the nation..

The KS code isn't worth the trouble of getting under the lower intake to replace it.

Sounds like a good Xterra.. Timing belt/ Water pump are every 100k
Looks like you have a good idea of whats going on ;)

I have 250k on mine

Not a huge issue in Montana, but a supercharged radiator is a good upgrade as it provides better cooling for the engine. As far as the hoses, since the radiator has to be pulled to get to the belt, might as well replace them as well. 249K here...

If a respectable garage or dealer did the timing belts and such, there should be a plate adhered to the underside of the hood that has the mileage it was done etched on. I had 253k when I got rid of my gen 1 and it still ran fantastic, minus the A/C. Keep the fluids changed, and it'll last you forever.

Thanks for the feedback. I got a quote of about $1500 from the local garage for the maintenance list, so I've got an appointment booked there in a week and a half.

The tires are both scary in the snow (Walmart specials...Uniroyal Laredo A/T) and a little more worn than I thought when I first looked at it (I hadn't looked too closely because I had been told they were less than a year old and had less than 10k on them...which, in hindsight, is looking like a bit of an exaggeration). I'm thinking that it probably makes sense to buy a decent set of non-snow tires now, deal with suckage in the snow for a month, and have good tires for the summer. I'd like to have decent gravel / rocky road performance (thinking roughish forest-service roads, nothing super rugged...but I'll probably push my luck at some point), and it seems like there are a lot more options in 31x10.5 than there are in the metric sizes stock to this model.

Will those 31s fit (a) on the stock rims (which currently have 235/70/15s on them) and (b) without body and suspension mods? I've been finding mixed reports online. Down the road, I'm thinking I might do at least a PML, but I'd like to stick at stock height for now (by which I mean "I'd rather not spend a bunch more money right now, especially if I'm going to buy a new set of tires").

Welcome to XN!

That is a SUPER clean truck for having over 200k on it.

Your list is right on par, and the price isn't too bad for getting the work done. One thing I've learned about Nissan trucks....as long as you keep up the maintenance, they'll last forever.
