Well, today at work I figured I would rotate the tires to see if that did anything to the ride.... While I was doing this I realized these have no balance weights on any of the rims. I am assume there should be? Maybe the problem is that the tires are not balanced at all? I cannot rememeber if the swampers I had on my Jeep had weights, but my guess is that they did.

I think that is probably the best bet. I daily drove a Jeep Wrangler on 33' super swampers a few years ago and those didn't really give me much problems so I'm a little unsure why these would. Will get it figured out.

Could be that bad steering has worn the tires funny and now even though it is 'fixed' it still runs funky

Very true. I was "told" the tires are brand new and they sure look the part, but thats what you get when you buy used. No way to know for sure. Honestly it's driving a little better, but its a project for sure. Not sure if I would have bought it if I really looked enough. I'm not having second thoughts or anything, I plan on seeing this through and using it but when I really look, seems like it has been taken apart everywhere.

Going to be honest, I bought it for $7,000 and now put another $600 into it, so I've only got $7,600 into a rig that I'm sure whould cost close to that in just parts alone (not counting the car itself). It will take some time and effort, but I see the potential for sure. A nice clean and easy Daily driver it is not though.

It drives better but still nothing like a normal car. I'm going to drive it a bit (no highway) and start looking for the culprit. Probably is the tires, but man I love the way they look. May end up buying some more street friendly ones and keep these for when I plan on going on a trek.

I wonder if it could be as simple as a warped rotor?Nice rig good luck with getting it sorted.

Another good suggestion.... I am going to try dynabeads in the tires and see if that helps any. I can always have the rotors turned at pep-boys for like $10 a piece so that is a good idea as well. Cant hurt anything to do it just in case.

Thanks

DEFINITELY balance the tires! They need to have something on there if you plan on driving it at speed, new tires or not. For an offroad only rig, not so much. Either dynabeads or wheel weights should work. Dynabeads may be better for the long run and not require re-balancing as much; I prefer weights, but that's just me, I know plenty of others who prefer beads, especially on offroad rigs. I have to get my wheels/tires re-balanced every 4-5 wheeling trips, mostly because I'll lose a little bit of tread or a chunk of a lug or 2 or I'll throw a weight or something. Those bigger tires tend to unbalance themselves pretty often. I had a bad wobble for a little bit and re-balancing them took it away.

Thanks. Yea, I went with the dynabeads and it helped a lot. Still a little shimmy, but I think I had about the same with my old TJ Jeep on Swampers. Definitly drivable now. Still have lots of little Gremlins I need to find and kill with fire, but I see potential and look forward to getting it driving the way I want it.

Still wrong:
1 -Power locks do not work -Using the door switch and FOB, I can hear a click under the dash and around the fuse box in engine bay but they do not lock or unlock.
2 -Driver door lock - has stuck on me once and would not let me open the door at all. Crawled in through passanger door and when I got to work it magically fixed itself and worked. This only happened once, but was a major inconvienance so I need to pull the door apart and see if anything looks off in there.
3 -Suspension makes lots of noise
4 - Pulls to the left when braking hard. Pulls to the right when accelerating hard. Something tells me this is a suspension issue not brakes.
5 - Need to buy a couple mising parts. Passanger sun visor, passanger "oh ****" handle on roof, Rear windshield wiper assembly.

Overall I am liking the Xterra. Havent gone off road yet, I want to get it driving to where I trust it completly on road before I take it off.

Did find a couple more pics from the previous owner:

Well, I got this thing up to 65MPH this weekend and thought for sure I was gonna die... lol
Guess I have no choice but to buy some new tires and hope that fixes this crazy shake. Doing a little research I'm thinking BFG KM2's are the way to go. Seems like the price to performance is about the best?

I am dying to see this thing in person! Local friends seem to like the KM2's as well as folks on here. Another good option is the Goodyear MTR's, CaptainMorgan runs them and likes them as far as I know

It's been a while... I tried to sell the X but just couldn't find the right person (actually had people offer what I wanted, but I knew they wouldn't be happy with this as a daily driver).

So.... It's not for sale anymore, and guess it's time to spend some coin on it.

Question: First thing I need to do is get some new tires. These swampers are just horrid over about 50mph. I am mostly looking at Goodyear MT/R (Kevlar) at this point, but let me know if you think there is a better suggestion. Real question is size. These 35's look pretty small with the lift so I am looking at the 37 or maybe even 38's. I might have to do a little more cutting to fit properly, but I am definitly willling to do that. If I do go 37/38 that will be a lot more expensive but I dont want to buy tires again for a very long time so I'd rather do it right the first time.

Looks like cost of just getting goodyear MT/R in 35's would be around $1,000. If I go to 37's it would be closer to $2,300 (I would have to buy 17" rims).

After tires, I want to do some work on my alam system (it does have an ignition cutoff already) as I get worried about it getting stolen and it is too tall to fit in the garage. Then probably a wrap job to really make it unique, but I am still trying to decide what exactly I want on it (Camo is getting a little played out).

I'm actually excited to keep her and have some fun this summer going out and wheeling it.

Welcome to the nation officially man. You're in good company out in NM.

Thanks. Talked to a few locals on here, but havent been able to meet in person yet. I'm looking forward to it soon though. Now that I've made up my mind to keep this and do some stuff myself (it's currently bought not built) I'm getting excited. I know there are lots of good folks in my area so hopefully we can get together soon.

As long as you aren't afraid to do some trimming 37s would be fine. If your planning on driving it a lot on the street though you may want to consider sticking with the 35s. The Kevlar M/TRs are a good tire as well as the KM2s. General Grabbers are another good one but have a slightly softer tread so don't expect them to last as long on the street

Woooo!!! Glad you're keeping it dude!!! For an Xterra only run, we're looking at the end of May and going down to Socorro. As for the local off-road group I go with, they are looking at going to Mt. Taylor in the middle of May.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuut, in the interest of wanting to meet you and running something close for you, I think I can get a Puerco run put together in May. I bet we could get NMTerras to go and probably a few local buddies too.

And Kevlar MTR's seem to be on nationwide backorder :(

Now to decide if I should wait until they come back (Goodyear says they do not have a timeframe), or go with something else.

Dont listen to those chodes at 4 wheel parts. I went in there asking about ship times on icon stage 4 for my truck and the guy tried to argue with me that they didn't make that for my truck (11 Ram 1500) because it has leaf springs. (It doesn't. And the truck effing rocks with that stage 4 suspension in it...)

I like my KM2s, I also like the cooper discoverer stts. But for crawling, and lasting, I would go with the KM2s. I have no personal experience with Toyo, but have heard good things.
Now, as to size...IF you are planning on moving up to 37s, you should also plan on doing some revisions to your radius arms... See for example Alpine Spirit's rig on Ronin Wheelers. Grandpa X can speak on this with way more competence than I can, I'm just passing on what I've heard, and that is the Calmini kits aren't designed to handle the bigger meats.

Here is a quote from Casper on an older thread, re: Broken radius arms:

"This has happened to a lot of us. It's what happens when you build the kit for other then what it is designed to do. i.e. bigger then a 33" tire, not running a sway bar to limit the articulation etc, etc.

In a radius arm design there is only so far you can flex before it binds. Once it binds up, something has to give. If the weld one the drivers side mount where it's welded to the cast isn't perfect then that usually goes. If that weld is done right, then the upper arm usually will snap. There are several ways to get it to go further. On a hard mounted upper arm like ours you need to have one of the arms "wristed" (I think thats the term they use) where one arm will be un-pinned near the axle to allow it to pivot when the axle goes up and down. The other more common way is to not hard mount the upper arm and have joints on it where it connects to the radius arm. This allows it to flex more. There are different schools of thought as to whether or not you should "inboard" the upper arm or not. Kevin's arm is not in-boarded, mine is. Both flew very well.

Should be an easy enough fix Eric, just need to decide which way you want to go. I really don't think Calmini will do anything since the kit is not installed on your truck as it was intended to run. But give them a call and be nice. They are always willing to work with folks who don't go off on them. :) Feel free to contact me if ya need any help.

Cheers,
Josh"

Crap, not a good weekend for me. Next I'm available I think...

Saturday got a D-Day party and Sunday we are drone racing (my new money burning endevour).

Thanks for the info on the Radius arms, I will have to look into that. I know the truck was wheeled a lot with 36"s a lot, not sure if the extra inch will cause me problems or not. I'm so sad I cant find the tires I want that I'm not really sure what to do. Leaning towards the KM2's but I don't think they make a 37". Would save me a fortune if I stick with 35"s (I have 15" rims currently) but I just think they look too small :(

Well, let's see what shakes out next weekend. If you have a truly stock Calmini SAS, then I think you are likely to have issues sooner or later even on 35s. So before you go splashing the big 37 cash, do your homework.

No clue if its stock or not... Maybe when I see you guys you can tell me. I know this was made for wheeling and has been put to the test, Someone put a lot of work into it. I am out of my element with it for sure however. I really wish they would have left the roll cage setup, just because......

Well.... Since the 37"s are on nationwide backorder (I stopped by Goodyear today to confirm) I just went with the 35"s. I think it lost a lot of the "cool" factor, but holy hell does it drive so much better. Feels like a stock car now (I still need to work on a couple issues though). I really wanted the 37"s and if they could be ordered I think I would have but both Goodyear MTR and BFGoodrich KM2's were not available. I went with the KM2's as theywere actualy in stock in 35"s.

Price difference was huge on the 2" difference so I guess it was better in the long run. Looking forward to driving more.

Honestly you probably wont notice much of a diffrence off road. You arent wheeling hardcore so you should be just fine.
