Interior Fishing Gear Setups

Doesn't seem to be to much talk on here about fishing stuff and I have real bad cabin fever now so I figure I'd post this up. In my '04 I had the Lobo Rack Mod done. Not sure if I wanna do it in my new X or not. So my question is what do you do with your fishing gear in your X. I don't even have a cargo net in my X yet which is going to be a problem once I get my gear in there. I do alot of trout fishing once the season comes in here in PA. Usually fish that until bass and the larger fish seasons open up. I tend to have more gear for trout since I have spinning gear, and I usually take Fly gear as well. Plus waiters and vests and all that stuff. Change of clothes in case I fall in. LoL

I guess I'm hoping people have some photos of your setups and such. The Lobo rack worked will with rods that are 6 foot and larger. I'd put the end of the rod up on the Lobo Rack, then I'd have a bungie across the "Oh **** Handles" and usually the tips of the rods would go under the visors in the front and then nothing would move. Not sure what I'm going to do now.

Yeah I've got a setup for my fly rods...it's a cut off hockey stick with foam taped to it with slots for the rods between the backseat hangers, and a few eyelets with elastic strung through them for the back of the rod. I've got a pic somewhere...

Yeah it's in my build thread. Click on my link below and scroll down the op

I looked at Terra's build. I was just looking at seeing some photos for some ideas thats all. I know what I can do already but thought maybe someone had something already out there cooler than my ideas. LoL

In the pic you'll see two crates in back. Not how I have it set up now, but at the time it was one for recovery gear and tools, the other waders, tackle and boots

You mean you don't think a modified hockey stick is cool? And the foam rod holders were hip pads I took out of my old hockey shorts...

Either the photos aren't there or its my PC. Cause I don't see them. As for the hockey stick idea. Not something I would think of. I did think about the foam rod holders that I have in my boat but I don't think it would look to good on the roof. LoL

Mine looks ghetto, but it allows me to quickly store rods driving one fishing spot to another and keep em rigged up. Up to 9foot rods

A friend with an FJ has a Yakima ski and snowboard rack that he bought used for cheap on his roof that allows him to carry four or five rods and have them locked up. We do a lot of surf fishing, so a good bit of our gear is way too long to fit in the cab unless it's a two piece rod. I've been thinking of doing the same thing for my X, but I'm also planning to get a fishing kayak, so the rods on the roof may not be an option. Other than that, all of our fishing is in a boat, so the tackle generally goes in the boat too. I have done the bungies across the ceiling hooks and handles as you mentioned, but the rod tips in the front of the cab drive me batty, so that's usually a last resort for me.

What I think I'm going to do is start with a receiver hitch basket and add some rod holder tubes with a locking cross bar over the reels, and angle them outward a bit so a kayak can fit between them if it hangs off the back of the roof a bit. Then I can put an ice chest on the rack between the rod holders. It's been a project in the back of my mind for a while, but the beaches we usually surf fish on have been closed a majority of the time since the Deepwater Horizon spill, and this hasn't really been a priority.

I'm interested in seeing others' ideas.

Yeah I think the largest rod I have now for fishing is 6'5. We don't have super huge fish here in PA. Mostly anything I have should fit inside which is where I would rather it anyway. I need a type of cargo system anyway for other stuff. I bought my X used around Xmas time and it didn't have any nets or anything in it. And I have yet to really find something I like online. Granted I can't find the stock nets that should be in there. Trout season is really when I have more gear than normal. Weekend trips usually turn into all day events. I have a little grill I'd bring sometimes and a cooler of course. Plus all my fishing gear. I've yet to pack anything in my X yet like this so I'm not sure how I'm even going to organize it to begin with. I do have a hitch basket which is usually where the cooler goes. That is if I am going for more than one day.

I often like to camp as well and I usually take my fishing stuff with me depending on where we go. My places (if its a campground) has fishing access. I didn't get out much last year (Camping) and I know have a little girl I have to account for. So my gear space is cut in half due to a car seat. I usually take some time to plan my packing anymore cause the X isn't super big inside for how much crap I tend to take. LoL

I'm thinking I'm going to have to go back to the Lobo Rack and bungie system for at least the rods holding part of it. I didn't use my Lobo that much. hence why I was thinking of not putting it back in. That and I don't see many Gen 2's with it. Wasn't sure why though.

With the whole tip thing. I usually fold down my visors put the tips there then fold them back. No harm on the eyelids and they usually stay put! I drive on some rough roads too sometimes with this setup and they normally don't move. In my 04 the visors sucked. They didn't hold tight to the roof. Now mine do. Should actually be better.

The big rods we have aren't so much for big fish as they are for getting really long casts out past the surf line.

I found this while searching Amazon for rod holders to attach to a receiver hitch cargo carrier. It suction cups between the rear quarter windows, so it's a temporary option if you don't want to install a LOBO shelf in your new X. Dunno if you want to spend that much, but it's a nice option.

That is a really cool idea. Definitely not worth the price though. I'll go Lobo rack. I had some recovery gear on it and my rain gear and some other things. I have to organize it better though. Keep what gear I might need all the time on it.

This is a fancy, expensive version of my hockey stick mod. I have mine set up so the tips point down, through the middle and between the front seats. Securing tips when you have the back secured is a good way to need new tips, on a fly rod at least
