First and foremost, I cannot take credit for this idea. It was either SurfnSnow or DarkKnight on another board, but I can not for the life of me find the thread on it.

EDIT: It was MacGuyverMedic who first came up with the idea. I saw it long ago and had been planning to copy it for a long time, but couldn't find the thread to give props. Thanks to croftonbilly for finding it. /EDIT

Anyway, here goes:
These suck:

Get rid of 'em. There's a little slot in them that you can insert a flathead screwdriver into to pop them right out, leaving you with this:

In their place I put these:

They come in a 4-pack for around $6 at Lowe's.
I secured them with these:

It's just a matter of drilling two holes using a ³/₁₆" bit and attaching the tie down. I hit mine with some self-etching primer and Duplicolor bedliner first. Still debating on painting the screw heads as well.

And that's it. I may put the other two in in the lower corners of the hatch opening, in order to secure a cargo net to keep stuff from falling out when I open the hatch. Still debating that.

I used footman loops, it's in my write on the Raingler shelf. Good share though. I agree those factory ones are not awesome.

Thanks guys, for finding that thread and posting up your own versions.

To give proper credit, it was MacguyverMedic who first came up with the idea.

A tip: Don't use the crappy zinc screws I used. They're way too easy to strip. Get stainless.
