How-to: Fog lights by-pass without giving up factory switch

From the day I picked up my X I already hated the fact that I can not use my fog lights along with my roof lights. While traveling on the back roads with no lights, it is obvious that you want more lights if you want to use your roof lights, but your fog will get disabled the moment your hi-beam is on (you required to turn on your hi-beam to activate the roof lights).
If you want to be able to use all of your forward lights (head lights, roof lights, and fog lights) like I do, then I hope this information will be helpful to you. You will be able to turn on/off your fog lights independently anytime, in combination with any of your other lights using the original stock switch.

First of all I would like to say thank to mcguyvermedic for his original mod.
If you have a 2005 - 2008 model please follow the how-to from macguyvermedic.

If you have a 2009 - 2011 model X, the IDPM is a little different.

There is no relay for the fog lights so you must add one, please follow the instruction below.

First step please follow these steps shown here from macguyvermedic to modify the stalk.

NEXT: Once you have the panel off remove the stalk

NEXT:Remove screws that hold stalk cover on

I made 2 small changes to the original steps shown above to my own personal preference, but you can do whatever you're comfortable with.
#1. Instead of removing the wires from the circuit board, I cut in the middle so if I want to return it back to stock I just need to solder those wires back easier than onto the circuit board.

#2. Instead of break off the white tab I loop the wires through the hole provided.

Second step, I run (any)ONE of those wires from the stalk to the IDPM fuse box in the engine bay through the firewall, the other wire you only need about 1-2 foot long and ground it to the metal of your X underneath the dash (inside the cabin).

Third step, you will need to prepare your relay.

(the 2 wires from 30 and 85, you only need them to be 5-6" long.)
The reason why there is no wire in the number 86 from the relay, this is where we need to connect the wire that we ran from the light switch stalk to the IDPM earlier.

Forth step you need to connect the add-a-circuit fuse tap to number 85 on the relay and add the spade connector to number 30 on the relay like so...

You do need to modify to the spade connector to make it smaller to be able to connect to the fog light fuse spot by filing it down.

Fifth step, you want to connect the spade connector to F10 slot, and the fuse tap add-a-circuit to F7 slot.

Sixth step, you want to run the wire from the light switch stalk and the 12V power wire through the hole provided in the fuse box.

Final step is to connect the 12V red wire to the battery and you are done. You will be able to use the fog lights with your head lights (high beam and lo beam), and with the roof lights. Or turn it off if you don't want to use it.

Great write up. I've been meaning to do this since I got my X. It's probably the most annoying thing about it.

So since this is modifying the fogs and not the offroad lights, would this allow you to turn on the running lamps and fogs at the same time, or is it still just low beams?

This mod should allow you to turn on the fogs any time the tail lights are on, so if the headlight switch is just clicked to the parking lamps, you'll still have the ability to turn the fogs on.

question on this, does this still only turn them on with the headlights or are they completely independent? (as in if I flip that switch on, they're on, regardless)

I'd like to be able to do this, but, only have them come on if my headlights are on, cause, tbh, I leave the fog switch on 24/7....that could kinda suck to have a dead battery cause I forgot to twist em off too....

I'm the same with the fog switch. I never turn it off.

As long as your power coming into the relay is the feed to the parking lights, then no. You would at least have to have the parking lights on in order to use the fogs.

That ensures that the fog lights cannot be operated unless the parking lights are on.
