Difference between 4x4 and 4x2 transmission

Can anyone tell me the differences between the 4wd and the 2wd transmission? I need to replace my transmission and I found that the 2wd are cheaper but I eventually want to convert to 4wd. My buddy said I may be able to just drop the transmission later and swap out the tail shaft and tail shaft housing but he doesn't know if it's possible on our transmission. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thinking about getting a new X but have a questions.

1) The 2013 S 4x4 model lists a "gearbox" as standard equipment where the X 4x4 model does not nor does it list as an option. Can someone explain how this is possible?

2) The Pro4X model lists a Dana as the rear axle for the manual tranny only. Which one is it and what is the gearing?

the pro 4x has a variant of a dana 44 but that's in all pro 4x models. on the s and x model only the manual transmissions have them. i think the gears are 3:63 on the pro 4x. the c200k is like 3:13 and the manual x and s models are in between the c200k and the dana 44 from the pro 4x.

and that gearbox question, they all come with manual and automatic. idk why it specified all weird like that, but either tranny is available in any model.
