update: these bulbs are nice...until they blow. which, I've already had one do, I'll be ordering another set, and grabbing a second set as backups for now, because they're considerably brighter than the silverstar ultras that I tested and took back, and they're only $21 a pair instead of $40 for silverstars or $50 for ultras

    ***IMMEDIATELY PENDING MODS***
    • * 4" HID Driving Lights (these are already purchased, were supposed to go in the RLC bumper, but, they're physically too large to fit, so, if I can fit them on top with the LED Bars, I will, if not, I'll delete them and sell them)
    • * TYT TH-9800 HAM quad band radio (10m/6m/2m/70cm) with external speaker and face relocated off of main unit (still trying to figure out where to mount the 50" antenna that this thing needs, so, if you have ideas, send em my way)
    • Pending Mods List
    • * beadlocks to mount 285/75R16 KM/2's on allowing something a bit more fuel efficient on when not wheeling.
    • * rear bumper with spare carrier (will be custom made)
    • * ARB Front Locker
    • * forward, rear, and "front tire spotter" night vision cameras, attached to small screen in cabin
    • * "blackout mod" I'm working on coming up with a mod that'll black out all internal lights, and external lights on the vehicle when the switch is on, this will be a rotary style switch that disables head, tail, brake, reverse, and any other lights I can tie to it, I'm not entirely sure how to accomplish it yet, so, I'll happily take any suggestions on it that ya'll think of.
    • * push-style e-fan to force air across aux transmission cooler for better temp management while on trails and in summer heat

I'm working on making this a fairly tactically sound vehicle once I'm done, I haven't really plotted any armoring or anything, but, I do want the vehicle to be able to go wherever I want, without the need of being spotted by anyone or anything that might be watching. To that end, I'll be aiming for custom skids, locked front and rear, front and rear bumpers that can get me anywhere that I need, as well as as much or as little lighting as need be, in addition, the plan is to start building toward an exo cage, and in doing that, I *want* full door protection as well, but, I'm not entirely sure how to go about covering that angle.

(this one was coming up out of an ugly hole, deep enough that the water actually goes over the hood for about 3 feet then you're out of it)

(front shot of hitting that hole slowly, note the people waving out the windows...my X was the only vehicle out of the 5 or 6 that went through that hole that didn't stall out and have to fight to get it to restart after going through once....I went through 5 times ranging from nice and easy to flat out hauling *** through it.)

I'll put my Current Mods that I'm in process of completing.

Building the Custom Rack

The rack was inspired by the dephep rack, building it out of 1"x1"x14ga square tubing

Final layout of rack's floor in framing stage
P8279343.jpg

P8279344.jpg

we've got the floor finished on one side, and flipped it to weld the rest of the floor, then we'll put on the light bar on the back and start putting uprights on, then the top rail too. As far as mounting, gonna do a 2x2 square or 1x2 rectangle tubing with the long side running across the existing rails... More pics to follow as we get it constructed and mounted.

sure, my plot was to put it up in my wet box, but, I suppose under the hood might work as well. I just haven't had the time or spare funds to grab the speaker, and didn't need it yet.

thanks man, had a blast, looking forward to taking you & your X down some trails, I'm curious as to how a 1st gen handles....I may look into grabbing one as a dedicated toy build...

also, updated pics post with more/new pics

nope, a little bit of research before hand made the decision that if we're gonna try to do something locally it's gonna be at the river. the bit of info I found indicated that the land owner was going to have us all go out and do the work to cut the trails, but give no one but a few heads of the major offroad clubs free access, and no one gets any discounted pricing in going out, whether they helped establish the place or not. I was quoted around $50/weekend as expected rates, and to be honest, that's simply not something I'd support.

The river is one that if you get the sticker, that's all it costs you. So, we're gonna roll that way, I'm aiming to get a deal set up with the park rangers to set up a gathering out there if possible.

well, it's done, just waiting on the straps to tie it down, then rough it all and herculiner it. I kinda want to make a spare mount that bolts the spare down to the rack up there too, and obviously that'll be something that I've got to decide before I prep and finish it...

That's what I did with my roof rack. Had some 3/16" steel plate I welded in and drilled out 2 holes to mounty spare up on top with grade 8 hardware. It's only up there for wheeling though.

well, when I do it, it'll be a permanent move if I have anything to say about it....I don't like having it under the rear end....

I don't like keeping mine on top at all, it just adds to what kills your gas mileage and making it more top heavy.

I have run it like that on the trails but not day to day and the last few times I went out I just left it under there but we don't have crazy rocks that can puncture it either around here.

it's not puncturing that bothers me, the fact that the sidewall of the tire rubs the frame is what bothers me, I prefer not to risk ruining my spare without it even being on the vehicle.

I'll second that. After seeing pic of your X going through water, a snork seems high on the list.

You my friend need a snorkle.

My oldest son just went to your town for work, he does shut downs in the plant type stuff.

well, if he's an offroading type, and going to be here for a while, PM me and I'll give ya my number that you can pass on, I might could go play the 18th if he wants to go....

you'd think that, but, I checked the air box after I'd even stopped to shift in into 4LO in the middle before driving out, and not even a drop inside the airbox....I've got way bigger fish to fry before I consider something like a snorkel....like a lift and an ARB front locker....

Did we forget to mention that you need a "snorkle"?

nah, I just can't see myself doing a snorkel...I mean...I'd have to find a junkyard xterra that's the right color, and buy a fender so that I can cut a hole in it, and honestly, there's rarely enough water here to worry about it....

yep.....the "river" was high, because the freshly dug out hole was deep enough to get water over my hood driving into it slowly....the month before the water was barely enough to get my hubs while driving across the same spot...

sweet action....I just got approval to redo the headliner and get some custom seat covers made.....

here's my material source....

IMAG0277.jpg

they match the BDU's that I've got a few sets of, and, should set off the color of the X quite nicely....and yes, I may be a little redneck, shush ;)
