Coolant system issue

Ok so I have a 03 X that's having an odd overheating issue. Hopin someone can help.
When my wife drives to school (about 28 miles) she has no issues whatsoever. But on her way home goin up some hills etc the gauge starts to show its overheating however there's no loss of power at all. Seems to drive completely normal. She says when she turns the heater on it feels hotter than normal and the gauge immediately drops and stays normal. All I can think of is maybe the water pump is goin out so its not pumping as much water as it should? Or the tstat is clogged and not letting enough water pass? I know the tstat is new (I replaced it a couple thousand miles ago)
Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Was the thermostat put in the right way up?
Fan Clutch?
Air bubble?

I know for a fact the tstat is in right.
Fan clutch is a good thing to look at though, I hadn't thought of that.
And you know what..I noticed my reservoir was cracked just a bit. Maybe it is an air bubble, how would I go about "burping" the cooling system?

Thanks for the ideas.

Park on a level surface, and loosen the plug on the top of the intake and remove the radiator cap. Top off radiator and with the cap off, run the engine until normal temp or coolant spills out radiator. Cap radiator and run at 3K for a 10 seconds a few times. Cool down and lather, rinse, repeat until the coolant level doesn't go down.

So I've been driving the X around today and it's only been overheating when I'm at idle at a light or something. But I swear it's not actually overheating. It jumps up to where the needles on the H. It should run poorly at that point and it drives completely normal. Am I wrong in thinkin that it should feel different if it's that hot?

Also..I pulled over and popped the hood and the fan was on.

mine did the same thing last year on a 6 hour drive, then like many of us i replaced the radiator with the sc one. gauge has never moved ever again and its gets to be 115 here.

Mine did that at nxm2. Had to ride with the hood cracked and heater on. Unrelated problem forced a motor swap and radiator swap. My stock rad was flithy even tho I spray it off after every ride. Put sc radiator in with no more prob.

Sounds like a fan clutch. Over heating WILL NOT cause it to run different

It seriously won't run any different? Every other car I've ever had would run different when it got that hot. My truck will shut off.

Well...anyone know a cheap place to get a sc radiator? Or any other suggestions?
We HAVE to drive this everyday. Kinda sucks right now.

Thanks guys. So is that the overwhelming thought? That I need to just get the SC radiator?
