another snorkel option?

Hard to say about that one. It's made for the body styles just before the Xterra. I would think if any snorkel from a Hardbody or early Pathfinder has been used on an Xterra this one should work too. Even if not it might be close enough. I've never really compared windshield and fender angles. So the question is, if it hasn't been done before, who's going to be the first to give it a try?

I think it might fit the body lines ok, but the top doesnt take a traditional snorkel head. I think that flat piece where the intake is at would end up hitting the roof rack.

Looks like it'll flow up the outside of the A pillar (as opposed to the windshield side), so it may just skirt the rack.

If anyone who did the Ebay snorkel still has that half-a-snorkel template they could carry it around with them and sneak up on an unsuspecting Hardbody or Pathfinder to see how it lines up. Of course that still wouldn't answer the question of the top part but would get the process one step closer, or rule it out.

I've wanted to do this mod for years! I finally ordered my Volant and the snorkel in the last few weeks. Those snorkels are actually a FRP knockoff. The real one is $450 though 4x4parts. Considering I don't know if it'll fit, it's rather try with the cheaper knock-off just in case, and since it's fiberglass based, it'll be easier to modify if need be. I was looking at using the section of the template to modify and form it to fit better against the fender since it has a small curve in it. I'm hoping this will be a March break project.

The neat part is that I didn't know it came with the fiberglass template, which will make my life that much easier, cause the paper templates that the real ones come with wouldn't line up with the body mark since they're obviously not made for our trucks, so with the FG template, we can truely place it and line it up on where it'll be mounted.

A quick test-fit (well hold the template up againt it) is very encouraging for the fitament.

Oh, and for the two, I ordered the first one, but it came in cracked, so he sent a second one.

I'd skip the volant... Wast if money.. The thing will not seal up at all and doesn't feel like it was made for the Xterra.. (Gen1). I really regret this purchase

Your partially right. The problem is that my stock airbox doesnt seal right anymore, its actually deformed where the two halves meet, so other than making my own airbox, I either have to buy a new stock airbox, or I go with the Volant. While I have read many threads about its not-very-good-"sealed"-design, I thought and fought about it for a while and in the end decided that the Volant would be easier to work with to mod over the stocks clamshell design. The only thing that will be a bit of a pain in the adapter to fit the snorkel to the Volant. Its been years since Ive worked with fiberglass but I want to go that route to make the adapter (as someone already has). My cousin is suppose to be really good with FG as well, so I dont see any issues with this part. As as a safety precausion, Ill probably add in a water sensor alarm just to make sure.

Grab an Apollo. It looks to seal up real good, mates with snorkels easily, and lets you run come filters.

I would sandwich plexi between the big hole and tap it for the 3" hole.. That was the plan for mine...

Well not the final pic, those ones disappeared or didn't save on the camera, but my Volant mod (for the most part, so far)

Not yet. Soon though. I took those pics (with the help of the girlfriend of course) between coats of clear, reason for the gloves. I finished off the clear Monday night so she's drying for the week (worked on it in the garage at the mother-in-laws) and i wont be back there until next weekend if I do. To be honest, I'm nervous/scared to do the install, I don't want to screw it up of course, but I'm anxious to get her installed. We'll see if I have the guts to do it this weekend.

Yep, quite happy it did. I didn't know they came with that, where I much perfer that for a custom install to be able to line it up properly rather than a paper fender template for the specific vehicle, that it isn't being mounted to.

Well the template is going to tell you all of the hole spacing. Which is crucial. It won't line up on the fender like it wants to, but that's where you come in. Get it lined up the way it has to be on your fender.

Kinda of realised it after, but the template had an oval hole, so I decided to follow the template first but not much luck cause it needed to be widened anyway, and it's too late for a hole saw at that point...

It fits well but it doesn't fit perfect. I'm pleased with how it looks What I'll be looking at next is that since the install portion is done, look at using mounting template that comes with to form a kind of adapter/spacer to have it form better against the fender. That'll be in a while since I've got other things I perfer to get to first like finishing it's piping and the Volant adapter, get my roof lights on but I've also got a modified dash trim to work for the light controller to finish for that too. The HID kit when it eventually comes in. Then the truck is going in to get the brush guard readjusted and the hitch on the rear bumper modified the first full week of May, and when that's done I want to work on a hitch spare tire carrier idea/prototype to get done in metal if my idea works out, so ya, that'll be a project in between projects, lol.

I think the only people that are ever going to know that it doesn't fit just right are the people that see that picture you just posted from the top down. Good job on the install.

x2...I think it is a cool alternative. I like the body matched painted snorkel...it's like a stealth install! You don't even notice it at first...then when you see it...it's like...WHOAH there it is!

Thanks. I think that's pretty much exactly it. Normally I dont stuff that looks hacked up and out of place, but in this instance (along with my first snorkel install, and first ever attempt of an install of this snorkel) i'm ok with the outcome. I could of easilly avoided to take pics of certain angles to make it look "better", but it doesn't help in terms of being honest with what the install is actually like for anyone else who would be willing to want to attempt it. Rather than people coming back complaning about the install of their own, not knowing it was going to look/install like it did, well at least now they know, and can either still go ahead with it, plan ahead to work with/around/modify it, or just avoid it in general. I'll still work on cleaning it up, but so far I'm pleased with it. A priority will need to make up an upper bracket. Was the first drive this morning with it at higher speeds and it wiggles around quite a bit.

I think it sits too high on the roof.

Yes and no. Despite measuring several times and using the template, I found it ended up higher than expected to where I wanted it mounted; the bottom should of been on the hump on the fender. No matter, it's ok, but it's also the reason why I took the pics of the measurements, so if anyone wants to compensate, they can gauge on where mine sits and how much to move down and over. Because of the angle of course. you'll roughtly have to move to the left the same amount that you want to do down, referencing how close you want it to sit to the A-pillar. It does sit high, but I think that's part of the design of it. Looking at the pics of it mounted on a Pathfinder/Terrano, it does sit above the roofline. Lowering it that difference might get it to sit like it would normally, but it's still doing to sit up there, it does have to let you clear the door to open ;)

But this last one I found, the Sani Kit, it looks like it's got a flat fender compared to the other ones....

I have no mount yet, and it wiggles quite a bit at highway speeds, so that's the next on my list is to get a bracket fabbed up.
