Accessing roof top?

Installed yakima fishing rod rack on roof but kind of a pain to access- stepping on the factory bars kind of awkward when parked on a slope. Yes I know most think they are worthless but this is my fishing machine and not a crawler. Looking for an alternative that has better platform to stand on. May even look into powered running boards. I have ordered the Gobi rear ladder but that is not going to help with side access.

Any ideas?

Hit up hardware stores and find a small folding step stool or short ladder to keep in the back. I have a little folding stool that helps with stuff like that and getting into my cooler.

Need Bigger Tires
I wonder if white knuckle style sliders with the kickout would make it easier than the factory step, they should stick out a bit further to give you a better step. The factory steps are basically useless for pretty much anything...

I have the shrocks sliders with the kickouts and I can stand on them to access the roof.

Our '06 has Insain Fab sliders that have flat diamond plate, and they're definitely better as a step than the round tube Shrock ones on the '09. I should probably add some grip tape to those, they're slippery when they get wet or muddy. Neither one offers a great step for my clown feet, but the one with tread plate is much more secure.

More often than not I just step up onto the rear tire. It's more comfortable to stand on and makes it easy to reach the middle of the roof.

Majority of the time I have to park on very uneven terrain alongside forest roads so the step ladder probably would not work
Ooh, can I see a picture of your rod rack?!

They work great for transporting rods between holes. I have a strap system on the roof inside for getting them to the river but once I put them together (9'-11') they ride well on top.

Can confirm snowboard and ski racks work great for transporting long skinny items besides skis. I have some similar ones and have used them for lightweight pipe and trim pieces.

Cool, I'd be concerned on long runs with dust getting into everything reel wise..

Did you read all the review's that showed indentation's in the body where it rest's ??

Indents from the step? No, I guess I didn’t make it past the positive reviews.. It might be OK once the X has a few more dents and scratches:)

Yeah, not only indents from the bottom, but also tends to pull out the door latch over a period of time.
It is a good idea IF the vehicle was built to take the stresses. I'll stand on the tire or on the platform I built.

I've got the Hardcore slider's that are also a step so I just step from there to the top of the tire .
Remind's me I need to take off those crossbar's up there .
