so about three weeks ago when it first snowed i went to put it in 4wd and i got up to 20mph and the x was shaking like the front end was going to fall off. pulled over took it out of 4wd and then drove to see if it would stop, it didn't stop,i thought the front end was really going to fall off. got out as i was really pissed. looked at everything and it seemed fine got back in and turn the wheels all the way to the left and than to the right and than drove and the x was fine got home and went to bed, the x drives fine until i try 4wd, than it shakes like a mad man, but when i turn to the left well driving in 4h it goes away and when i turn to the right well driving in 4h it gets worse and i tried the turning the wheels all the way to left and than to the right and it doesn't do what it does in 2h, and once im out of 4h i have to turn the wheels to the left and than the right and the shakes go away, i think its a bad cv axle or u joints i haven't had time to take my skid row plates off to look at the ujoints but i have played around with the cvs and there is some play but not much, or could it be something with steering or the alignment please help and sorry for the long post but just wanted as much information

Sounds like you have a hub that isn't engaging, a blown CV shaft or, possibly, a wheel bearing out of adjustment.

Do you have manual hubs? If not, then crawl under your truck and turn the front driveshaft by hand (make sure you're in 2H), see if both CV's turn and lock the hubs up. If both hubs lock up, you won't be able to keep turning the front driveshaft because the hubs will be locked to the wheels. If you can continue to turn the driveshaft, look for the CV that keeps turning and that side is the side with the blown hub.

If you have manual hubs, lock them in and do the same thing. The hubs may be turning to lock but not actually locking in. Turning the driveshaft with see if they're locked in or not.

If that works out OK and the hubs lock in, then go the side of the truck, standing next to the front wheels (one at a time). Grab the top of the tire and pull/push it to/away from you. You're trying to push it towards the engine and away from the engine. If you get a lot of clunking, you need to jack up that front end and see where the play is coming from and fix it.

For a blown CV joint, see if the boots are torn, if the shaft looks like it popped out, look for binding, anything out of the ordinary.
