So as some of yall know I am the owner of a fairly large Xterra/frontier instagram page. Well the other owner is not currently on this forum even after ive told him numerous times to get ver here but he still refuses. But anyways, Heres his stuffed xterra with 33" mud grapplers and 20" XD wheels. Most say it cant be done without a body lift, but he has broken the barrier. Even though he has basically no room for flex at all, it is a pavement princess so that doesn't bother him. Grill and headlights are out because hes currently doing a frontier swap.

I mean theoretically you could fit 40" tires without a lift if you did a tube frame and just left the fenders off. :kewl:

In order to run Codys tires, I would have to take everything to the frame..

LOL

Fitting, for most people, doesn't mean LITERALLY that you can get them on, but, that they would WORK WELL/Have room to move, etc.

:D

There was a guy a few years ago who said he was running 35x12.5's with no trimming and no lift or BL, and that everyone was a pussy for not being able to do what he did. (And that he off roaded it and it worked great)

Why get hefty mud tires for a pavement queen? Seem's like a waste of $$ to me. Looks good but I would have at least went with an A/T

I mean if the deal was so cheap to pass up then go for it. My brother-in-law put some meaty mud grapplers on his rig and they lasted about a 2 years before he had to get a new set.

So he's doing a fronty swap and bought those huge tires for what? If he never leaves the pavement then he's just a mall crawler in which I have very little to no respect for. I get it, it's your truck and you can do what you want with it. But I'd be embarrassed and somewhat ashamed if I bought all this just to pretend to off road.

Unless you're in a position like mine to where I *want* to go offroad (and often) but there's really no place to do it legally or closeby. "Quick runs down a trail" here are nearly impossible. I have to plan to make a day of it.

Just playing devil's advocate.

I can't say I like the look or think it was a worth while endeavour, but to each his own.

Oh I completely understand! This is how I feel about it and I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. But if you make attempts at going on trails and even if you do it once a month, or once every other month or whenever it may be, then at least you're DOING it. I know people don't live in areas to go off roading, and sometimes work doesn't allow you to go very much or maybe it's because you have a family that you need to take care of. I understand. But what confuses me is why someone would build a rig to be off roading-capable and say "NO, I will NOT go off roading". They won't even make an attempt at it. That doesn't make any sense to me. But again, like I said, it's their rig and their money and they can do whatever the hell they want to do. But that's not something I'd do. If I bought something that was good at off roading, but I wasn't going to TAKE it off roading, I wouldn't buy great shocks, a steel bumper, huge off roading tires, a titan/fronty swap, or do any of that then I wouldn't put time and effort into the truck.

There are a few reasons I can think of to explain why people may do stuff like that without going off roading:

1) Aesthetics. Some people just like the look of customized accessories. Maybe they don't use it for what it is fully capable of, but we have all bought stuff for no other reason that it looks cool. A steel bumper will protect you against a shopping cart as well as a giant rock.

2) Hobbyists and forever modders. I almost fall in this group. I picked up offroading because as a mechanical engineer, I love tinkering with things. My last vehicle was a BMW 318ti...lowered to the ground, nice suspension, fun zippy little car. I barely ever auto cross raced it despite all the mods I did to it. I liked excuses to modify and change things more than I did actually racing it. I got my Xterra simply because I needed something to navigate through the snow. As an Xtension of my tinker-filled-mechanical mind, I started modding it. I got into offroading simply because I liked working on the truck. I first lifted it and modified it without any interest in off roading.

3) Being different. There are a ton of Xterras with 3" SL 2" BL Shrocks all around. Never seen one similar to this. Some people just like the challenge of thinking outside the box and creating something original. Might not make sense to you or me...but hey...it doesn't have to :)

Its a part of human nature. Some of us like to tinker. We see something, and can't help but think "Hmmm, if we just XYZ, it will work better....."

A buddy got a toy electric car for his kid, and the next thing we knew, he's modding it, because it bothered him that it could be better....I use flashlights for work, and modify them to work better, and so forth.

:D
