A sad update today. I have been notified of a pay cut and hour reduction/change at my workplace effective monday. What this entails is to and from work at peak traffic hours, way less income, and the high fuel prices are not going to help. I tried guys... I did, but some things have to be let go. The X had been fun and interesting none the less, but I am going to be reduced to a motorcycle for a daily driver. I will not be getting rid of our new frontier, as it is our go to vehicle since we purchased it.

If you can stand to watch it, I have relisted it on ebay, and it will continue to be relisted until it sells this time. I also have the spare swap engine and transmission if anyone wants that still. I have to be a lot more aggressive with getting rid of my toys in these tuff times.

Rain... some like it and some don't.. I like it.

I commute 170 miles a week in this thing. But when it rains... there is something about this thing. Turn off the radio and listen, and roll down the windows to feel the cool mist (or sting).

Taking the X to an offroad park to show it some love... I will try to get decent pics. It rained all last night and a little this morning. Should be pretty fun!

Well... apparently I bent my calmini tierod links and drove about 110 miles between Hidden falls and today... needless to say I really screwed my front tires up with crazy toe in. I know exactly where I bent them on the trail too. Anyhow, I repaired it when I got home today and did a rotation. Horrible day today

A little update guys. My wife said I tend to have this issue with wanting to sell the X because I think I can't mod it anymore and grow tired of the same ole same ole. Well... she has approved a SAS. We will be going to Houston to pick up an axle saturday.

Also note.. I was supposed to be trading the X this weekend for a Harley and POF rifle... obviously my wife did not like the idea.

Lol...well I suppose maybe I could talk my wife into allowing a little more mod $$ if I told her I was thinking of trading it for a bike also!

It was dirty.... right now the plans for SAS are Coilovers/3 arm (Keep it as low as possible). If not I need to find a way to make IFS worthwhile. I have to keep messing with this X or I get bored.

There are some things I do not like about the IFS system. There are things I like about it. It is the same with SAS conversions. My biggest complaints are the torsion bars and steering. For starters I already rebuilt/repaired the 100k mile steering system, but I hate the torsion system. To get some more interest (myself) in the X again, I will be looking into designing/completing a stock width/travel coilover conversion since my SAS conversion has been crapped on.

Well...that shouldn't be too hard, copy your fronty's suspension setup onto your X...

I really like the idea of coilover conversion for our IFS. I do have a question though since this is my first torsion bar suspension vehicle (not including several old VWs but that's a totally different setup.) Why are torsion bars bad? I know the ones on some other 4x4s are a pain with having to change the adjuster keys for lift but not ours. Just wondering.

Well for myself, I don't like the limited options in what "springs" you can get. The torsion bar options are more or less a "heavy duty" or "oem" spring rate which tells me nothing but I have the two choices with no betweens or more/less. I also didn't like the fact that I have had 2 adjusters, and a few of the adjusting bolts break in my face (underwear trashed each time). I have never had a problem bashing the torsion bars, but they are well exposed. The other thing that I don't like and never felt easy about was the pressure exerted on the one leg of LCA. Not to mention the pressure is multiplied at the bar mounting point. The system is ok for a stock vehicle, but once you start modifying and adding weight; finding multiple weight torsion bars is out of the question.

The coilover system has its benefits. Dialing in is a huge one for me. You can use and play with different spring rates for heavier front end mods instead of a one size fits all spring. Ease of removal and installation without risking eye loss. Pressure footprint is larger. Extremely easy ride height adjustment. A tuned in ride is a great ride. Lucky for us, it seems like Nissan left us enough space to do this mod.

I have always thought that three things were bad for the 1st gen xterra: powerplant, front suspension, and steering system. All of which they have fixed with the new gen. Owning a new frontier I have zero complaints. Now I would like to bring the X to that standard.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. The spring rate option is a concern I've had too. Mine was fine with just the RLC bumper but a little soft with the winch added. Then again I've seen some with the "heavy duty" torsion bars with Shrockworks bumper and winch that were way too stiff. Having the almost unlimited spring rate options with coilovers sounds like the way to go. Since you seem to be quite good at engineering things that actually work properly, have you thought about an easy to use front sway bar disconnect? I'd love that option.

You are welcome! I just like for our platform to have more options. For sway bar disconnects, I have not even thought about that. I used to not run a front sway bar at all, but since I commute 98% of the time now, I have it reinstalled.

I thought about taking mine off until I saw Luke get more articulation on an sharp exit ramp than most people get on a hard core trail. Since the bar ends are right between the LCA and the tie rod it seems like some sort of center disconnect would be needed.
