i pulled the trigger today on some new tires finally. ran the stock long trails for 53k miles and thought it was time to ditch those crappy things. surprisingly, still had tread enough to pass inspection and then some, but they were breaking apart in chunks.

decided on 285/75/16 duratracs

I really like the overall look and durability of the duratracs. The fact they are good on road and great off road, while still looking mean - can't beat it.

Looks good man!

roadwarrior: first impressions obviously they look awesome. driving impressions, i expected more noise but they still sing to me softly lol. they are noticeably stiffer because my truck is bouncier and it likes to float on the road more. just takes getting used to.

and yeah i agree with all of you. great set :)

The Duratracs are commercial traction tires, so, have a relatively high load range, so, they can be bouncy/stiff, especially if the PSI is too high.

What PSI are you running them at, and what does it say on the sidewalls about the max load range and max psi?

(Generally, the range is so high, that for an X, you only need about half the max load, so the tire is not in its sweet spot as far as load/handling, etc...so to get it to the sweet spot for handling, its going to ride rougher.)

:D

Glad you like them. I'm deciding on getting rid of my Rugged Fails that are on my yellow X and replacing them with either Duratracs or something else. I loved the pair on my TJ.

yeah i enjoy them so far. haven't done the melt mod so they rub, but barely. it raised my ride height like 2" or so. more than expected, but i won't complain. seems my rear travel isn't as good, but i expected that due to bigger tires and them touching the wheel well at less flex. that means i need a lift.

They will get louder as they wear. Mine are singing pretty good now, but I don't really care, I just turn up the radio. I love the way they look, and grip. Right now the only other tire I think I'd ever move to is a 255/85/16 BFG KM2, but I seriously doubt I'll do that as long as the X is my daily driver.

I'm running mine at 40psi now, little tight but they will wear a bit better like that (and I do it to squeeze out a little more MPG when I'm commuting.) Rought ride doesn't bug me much.

I have run them as low as 20 on the highway and they don't even bulge. They feel like marshmallows at 20, I wouldn't recommend it long term. I did that in winter when the road was getting covered with snow on and off, and they eat snow like a mad yeti with the low psi. I went through the city ramming over the piles the plows left to pass folks hung up in the plowed part. It was freaking awesome. They probably thought I was a jerk, but I'm not the idiot that took a 2wd car out on 6" of hard packed sleet/snow/ice.

The DuraTrac's have been GREAT tires. Good street manners, and very strong off road. Not "mud tire" strong, but I have yet to get stuck in them. Its a good compromise tire. I must be pushing 20k on mine by now and they still look and drive awesome.

I'm running 35 in mine. The seem to be wearing good and the ride isn't too bad

yeah. texas roads are rather rough anyway. the drought and stuff has caused the ground below the roads to shift too much and break so it's like going off roading on your daily commute lol

I have had mine for 4 years and almost 60,000 miles on them. And I have found everything that Airmapper said to be dead on. They are great tires and it is about time to replace them, I'm down to 1/4" tread so I want to swap them out before winter.

better believe it sir :)
the guy at discount was surprised at how little they rubbed.

The 2nd Gen X's can come from the factory with 265/75/16, so going up to a 285/75/16 is not much of a jump, figure it might stick out ~ 1/2" more or so. Its sticking out ~ 10 millimeters to either side of the sidewall too, not a giant difference.

So, that it rubs at all is surprising for a wee upgrade in size, and its not surprising if it only rubs a little. If not for the wee bulge in the front well liners, there would be no rub at all typically.

Its definitely not worth doing a suspension lift to clear, as, it won't clear them in use...and a BL is also over kill, as the clearance issue is the bulge...not the ride height.

yeah i haven't done melt mod yet tj. once i do that, it'll be clear by at least 3-4". it's two inches clear now until i turn. i just was too lazy to do the melt mod and it doesn't bother me much. i will do it soon. i went off roading with the mild rub so idc haha.

Actually, they will self clear the plastic as the rub continues.
