Coin collecting in The Nation

So I started looking through my old coin collection the other day, which I've had going for a long, long time - probably since I was 9 or 10 years old, and I realized how complete some of my collection is despite not working very hard to get most of it and never putting a whole lot of time into it. Then I got all curious and made this thread.

Do you have a coin collection? Any cool pieces you want to brag about having? I'm working on getting photos of all my coins, for sharing and also just for personal/digital record. Any cool coin-related stories? I'd love to hear 'em!

Ha ha, I've love to catalog mine. Forget photos though, I'd just like to know for sure what I have. I started very young like you, and had a wonderful Aunt that gave me most of my collection as literally old bottles she and my uncle threw their pennies in many years ago. I loved to pick through them, with every penny I wished for a clean 1909 S VDB. My parents got me those cardboard books, and I actually have several with very few empty spaces. (I could fill a lot more out of loose coins.)

I need to look at mine to mention the more interesting coins, I have several odd ones. I probably have thousands of wheat pennies. The bulk being from the 20's I think. Even so my most valuable examples are probably only worth $10-$20, not like I'm going to retire off them, but that ain't bad appreciation for a 1 cent coin.

I have several 1909 VDB stamped (None from SF mint darn it.) I have a lot of 30's coins that literally look freshly minted. I have several 1800's coins. I actually recently though about going through them. When I get my transfer case off the workbench, I may take that on during the winter.

My favorite thing about coin collecting is I can completely forget about it, yet they just sit there and gain value. Nothing has been abandoned, wasted, unfinished, they are just doing their thing, and I can come back to them any time.

I have considered selling off the bulk of my excess coins, because I do have many multiples of a lot of years/mints. I would like to keep what I have to be well rounded, but I don't need the gobs of duplicates.

If your into the wheat (1909-1958) pennies, let me know, we can do some trading. I'd like to add some different stuff, maybe go big time and start collecting nickles and dimes.

Wheat pennies FTW! I also collect OLD quarters, including and up to 1964. I'm a numismatic.

My oldest coin is an 1888 penny. Also my most favorite.

My favorite is an 1857 Flying Eagle cent, in very good condition, that some dummy just had to drill a hole through at some point during that coin's life :(

I've got a few "Mercury" head dimes in great condition, a handful of Indian head cents, tons of buffalo nickels, many wheat back pennies and a few steel pennies, and quite a few Liberty head nickels.

You guys ever come across any double-die coins or offset die coins? They're the one thing I've always kept an eye out for in my change but have yet to find anything "big".

I have almost a full set of wheat pennies, my grandfather passed them to me and they are in a vintage Duke mayonnaise jar that is probably worth half of what all the pennies are. I've always wanted to collect coins but with the subtle variations and things of that nature I am not really certain that collecting coins is the hobby for a college student.. That being said I love history and love vintage coins. I also have some 1890s pennies, buff head nickels, foreign currency..

Also, my father and I have started setting back vintage bills. The old school style bills. Mostly circa 1993-1996 and while they may not be worth more than face value now, one day I hope they become something.

Also, also, I have a collection of 2$ bills.. I almost love spending them because of how many people say and claim they are fake/refuse to take my money.. People these days.

I've got a couple $2 bills stashed away too, the ones from '76 though, not any "real" ones.

A good amount of my collection was given to me by an uncle when I was little, but I was lucky enough that quite a lot of it I actually found in change from store. I remember rolling up lots of change (nothing collectible) and having my parents take me to a few local banks and asking if they had any rolls of coins that had been "laying around" for a while, and if I could trade my rolls for theirs. Amazingly enough some of them did and I found quite a few specimens in them.

Speaking of foreign currency, my mom has a drawer full of it, from all over the world, coinage and paper. When she was a teenager/early 20's she worked at a laundromat and would find the most bizarre stuff in the bottoms of the machines. She made sure to pocket all the cash, and keep the cool foreign stuff.
