Timing chain noise?

Does a timing chain that needs to be replaced make a specific noise?

I have a new noise that can best be described as metal hitting a hollow, thick aluminum. It can be heard best while idling or in 2nd gear (manual trans). Seems to be louder when the engine is pushing hard, like accelerating or starting from being stopped. Kinda sounds like a chain being drug over a heat shield or bell housing? (not that I have ever taken apart a transmission, but if I had to guess what that sounded like...)

haven't done the timing chain or clutch/fly wheel yet... yeah I know, need to.

Or, what does a cracked manifold sound like?

(It's always something with my X lol)

If the converters are still functioning, you can quiet them down by either ripping those heat shields off, or linking some large hose clamps together and putting them around the converters.

When I bought my truck both converters had clamps around the loose, busted heat shields and they lasted 2 or 3 years.

if it is just the heat shields just pull them off, also take a look at the flex coupler on the exhaust. They like to do the same thing at about the same mileage. I tack welded mine back in place a couple of times before just cutting it off.

And the belts don't make any sound before they go, at least not that you could hear over the racket that everything else is making.
