300zx starter not doing anything HELP

Okay new problem with the 91 300zx TT

so we got everything back together and we roll in out and what do you know it won't turn over it won't even try, the headlights come on the radio works battery is good, but no dash lights come on and the starter just sits there looking dumb.

We were planning on convoying down to Pitt Saturday to get ready for the start of the spring semester but at this rate we don't know when well be going down unless we fix this

While I'm not familiar with this engine, generally speaking a belt that walks around on the pulleys like that is usually caused by the pulleys not being square to one another or (more likely) that the belt is too tight.

In rare cases a loose belt can cause this too, though it would usually want to walk off the pulleys, not closer to the block.

What sort of tensioner does this engine use?

It's a VG30, so it should be pretty dang close to our engines

That being said, would it have a spring tensioner, like ours? Perhaps it was set too tight?

I remember using the. 014" feeler gage when I helped change mine out, initially it was too tight so we reset it. The feeler gage method was a little finicky I thought.

Auto tensioner but we have to set it to 4mm and that's proving difficult

Looking at the 90 FSM (I'm not opening a 91MB file on my phone) it has an auto tensioner. That doesn't mean it couldn't be malfunctioning.

I don't quite understand how the auto tensioner is auto if we have to get it to 4mm of the piston showing and 6mm deflection shouldn't it do that

Changing the name of the thread so we got everything back together and we roll in out and what do you know it won't turn over it won't even try, the headlights come on the radio works battery is good, but no dash lights come on and the starter just sits there looking dumb. Ideas?

Make sure the wires are connected right to the starter and you have 12v at the starter terminal. Make sure your grounds are connected. If you have all of the above then try to start the engine using a starter button or by shorting the smallest terminal on the starter to the biggest red lead on the starter. It should then engage the starter. If the starter doesn't engage with a good power source then its bad. if the starter does engage then you have a starter interlock issue meaning maybe the clutch switch or park neutral switch is open preventing a start at the key.

Sounds like a wiring issue to me. If it worked fine prior to the rebuild then something happened. A crossed or forgotten wire.

there is no ground wire shown on the FSM just told to plug into harness which we did, how should we go about shorting it, and couldn't that damage other systems. Does anyone know if the starter and dash lights would share a fuse?

Ground will be through the engine.

Dash lights would be on a different fuse. Give me a few minutes to look at the FSM...

There looks to be a green fusible link as well as a 10A fuse on the main fuse panel (#19). There's also an anti-theft relay that needs to be installed.

Dash lighting is fuse #3

You need 3 things for combustion: Spark, Fuel, Oxygen. He tried swapping coil packs to the bad cylinder and the problem stayed. When he pulled the plug, it was wet on one side. That means there is likely no spark happening. Swap the plug for a known good, and if it's still having issues, check the wiring to the coil. There should be B+ on the middle pin, and the Red/Green (cylinder 4) wire should be pulsing to ground when running. An easy (but dangerous) test is to pull the coil, put a plug in it, and hold the case of the plug to known good ground (i.e. intake) and see if it sparks. You're dealing with exposed voltage in the 1000's of volts, so be extremely careful.

If that is good, then check the fuel injector. Best way is to hold a rod to it (if you have access) to try and hear it pulsing.

Thanks for the input, I'll pass it his way. Idk if he'd be up for something that sounds so risky but I'll let him know. In the meantime if anyone else has different ideas let me know
