Strange noise after installing a lift? This may help....

Just thought I'd post an small problem I ran into when I installed my 2.5" Rancho lift kit.

I lifted my 2001 XE not too long ago, and for the most part everything went smoothly.
However when I took it for the first test drive after the lift was installed I noticed a noise coming from under my truck.
It was a high-pitched sound, almost like the warning on brakes when they get low, but my brakes are fine. The sound was like the rotor back plate was rubbing on something, cuz it would get faster and slower depending on my speed..
Those back plates are very flimsy and figured that was the issue....but when I checked them out, they were fine.
I knew it was some kind of thin metal cuz it wasn't a grinding or binding sound, it was like scraping sheet metal.
I asked around my local 4x4 shops and no one could really give me answer to what it was without charging $90/hr to check it out.

Finally after driving w/it for over a week, and being incredibly annoyed by this sound, I took it into Just Brakes.
They threw it up on the lift and engaged 1st gear to try and locate the noise....Well, it didn't have anything to do with the wheels like I thought.
Because of the new angle of the drive shaft due to the lift and bigger tires, the front of the drive shaft was rubbing on that outer sleeve from the transmission!

Then it all made sense! That sleeve is a very thin metal surrounding the joint of the drive shaft to the tranny, and when it spun it hit the bottom of the sleeve....so the fix?.... Just take a flat head and bend the sleeve down to where it doesn't rub.

Hopefully this helps any of you that have a funny little noise that drives you nuts! =)
