Not sure what this is?

can anybody tell me what this wire is for? Located right beside where wiring comes off of frame and goes to liscence plate lamps. Have a wire connection with nothing plugged into it ? Can this be left exposed without anything plugged into it? 2002 xterra

It is the trailer light wiring harness. It plugs the trucks brake and turn signal lights into the trailer if you should tow one.

Hey bushnut thanks for the quick reply seems exposed to the elements or is mine missing some sort of cap? I may use in the future

Not much gets up in there during normal driving. But if you are worried about the contacts I’d slap some di-electric grease on it or at the very least some Vaseline. That will keep the corrosion at a minimum.
