Newbie Q: Lost keys

Hey folks,
I am still a relative newbie to this forum, please be gentle. My question:
When I purchased my used X, the dealership had only one key. Well, I recently lost it.
I am wondering what is the most cost effective way to replace it. Would it be through a dealership or can a locksmith replace it? It seems that most locksmiths wouldn't have access to key codes.

Please advise and thanks,
Shamoon

An auto locksmith can make a key and reprogram as needed. They have all the info and tools. Couldn't tell you pricing out your way, but I'm sure it will still be cheaper than dealer as long as it is not an emergency and within normal business hours.

What he said. most real locksmiths could make you one. The easiest way is probably the dealership with your title and ID but costly.

A hacksaw and a pair of visegrips. ;)

A good idea is to go to almost any hardware store and get some back-up non-chip keys made. They won't allow you to drive, but they WILL let you unlock your truck if you happen to lock the keys inside, and also will unlock the steering wheel if you need to roll it out of the way or have it towed. I have 2-3 "dumb" keys made for every vehicle I and my wife and kids own. Preposition as needed (at work, etc.)
