New Xterra owner from NW Indiana

After a month of research and searching around, I bought myself a 2001 SE 4wd about a month ago. Had to drive a ways away to Chicago to get her but I was able to get a good deal. She's yellow, with a manual transmission. The online community and part availablity affected my decision in buying the truck.

With 104k miles, she did have a few problems to take care of, I'm guessing the previous owner didn't want to do the timing belt/water pump so that was first on my list. I also replaced the clutch because it was warn out. The next was rust, none on the frame but I power washed, applied rust inhibitor and coating underneath and the frame. Lastly, I got very lucky and was able to find brand new rims and tires for $300. All in all, I'm very happy with the truck as the engine sounds and feels flawless. I wasn't a big fan of the yellow, but that's growing on me.

Please recommend me maintenance information that may be upcoming. I currently run full synthetic Castrol 5w30 at 106k miles.

Thanks in advance,
Nooriago

Welcome from VA!

Sounds do like you've already hut the big ticket items. Fluid change interval for the manual transmission is 80k. So if you haven't done it, I suggest it. I believe 90w gear oil, but don't quote me on it.

While you're at it, I'd do a complete flush/fill of the cooling system (don't forget that it needs to be burped), and change your diff & transfer case fluids. (you didn't mention if it was 4wd so I'm just assuming) past that, just basic tune up and it should be good to go for some time.

Nice looking truck and, again, welcome to XN!

Welcome from Chicago! Always great to see another Yellow X. :)

Not as essential, but replacing cabin air filters is an easy/cheap thing to-do. There's a DIY on how to install them if your X didn't come with them originally.

Are you interested in off-roading? If you're looking to wheel or just meet up with other Xterra owners in your area, then look into the GLX (Great Lakes Xterras). We've got a mod day coming up on May 9th hosted by P&P (right in Elkhart, IN). Great time to come out, meet everyone and get more antiquated with the X.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

Murdoch- The yellow just initiates a lot of comments from friends/co-workers but I'm not minding the tonka truck look at all. As long as I like it, who cares what anyone else thinks right??

Prime- I did the manual tranny fuild change during the replacement but I will consider the cooling system flush for sure. It is a 4wd so the diff&transfer case fluids need to be checked.

Render- I don't plan on offroading yet (need to make some mods for that and I plan on doing some this summer), but I'll consider going to Elkhard for the meet up. I tend to drive up there frequently anyway because my girlfriend's from the area. I joined the facebook group too and I appreciate the info. on that. Cabin filters were actually replaced last week and I had to charge up air cond. up too...

If any of you know of good bike racks to install on a gen1 Xterra, please let me know. I currently have the factory hitch installed on it so it would be ideal if the bike rack can be mounted on that.

Thanks again!
