I've had mine hang a few times. Is your 4wd light on and your range indicator blank?
With key on, engine off, in neutral (and clutch pressed if manual) work the control Knob for the 4x4 to the low position. Then turn the key off for a minute, then back on. See if it will recognize the current position.

Did you try backing up a little? Sometimes my 4L is under load still and I need to back up a car-length before it pops back to 4H or 2WD.

This was going to be my suggestion. Pull the fuse for the abs system. That has done the trick for me.

sounds like the shift motor went bad. you can take it off and manually shift it out of 4 low.
