New Xterra owner- I had one years ago and only for a short time but found a nice Local 07 S with 59k and pulled the trigger today. Replacing my mint condition 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited but not real sure why after making it just the way i wanted it. OK- I HAVE A VEHICLE PROBLEM!-Bought it from the 90 year old original owner with 81k and have put another 9k in the year I have had it. Went through replacing all fluids, hoses, water pump, full tune up, tint, small lift, Ko2's.
Now I will do the same with the Xterra along with replacing the radiator which sounds to be problematic on these.
It will be used 90% of the time to get me on a river or lake as a fishing machine. Came with the factory tow package which has never been used. Will occasionally tow my 16' boat.
Anything else I need to address?

Welcome! Radiator replacement and transmission flush should be priority one if it's an automatic.

Next is going to be the timing chain shoes. Does it currently make any whining noises up front? Not a huge priority, but will need dealing with eventually.

Yup the whine is up front and after watching some videos it appears to be the chain- Is this something that should be done right away? Its not loud by any means but definitely has a low whine during acceleration. Damn between this and the radiator I am guessing maybe $2k in repairs?

Fortunately, the wear isn't enough to make the timing chain jump teeth. So it's just loud and annoying. It needs to be dealt with, but it's not an emergency. Figure on 1500ish for the timing chain if a dealer does it. If you get somebody else to do it or do it yourself, still get the parts from Nissan. It's $10 in parts.

Quoted $1750 from local dealer- Since it seems to be a pretty big job will probably have them do it instead of my regular guy. Had them also look into radiator and they told me it has a factory cooler and just needs to bypass the radiator? Does this sound correct?

IMHO.... No. it needs to be replaced so you avoid SMOD. Bypassing will save the tranny but it may cost you later if you tow or wheel hard and overheat the tranny.
Agreed. The Bypass is a temporary solution to be "safe" till you can replace the radiator. They will have it out to do the timing shoes so they shouldn't charge extra labor to replace it, just the price of the part. Talk that through with the service advisor and and get a new Nissan one. Even the Nissan Select (what I have) is a good quality unit. I'm going on 4 years with mine and no issues.

$2100 and the whine is gone and she has a new radiator. I have never spent that much having anything done on a vehicle despite having owned 90+ cars........ Sure hope she is good to me.

Those are the big ones. Now just keep the maintenance up and she'll last forever.
