I just recently bought an 04 xterra with 94344 miles! The title says xe/se. How do I tell what I have? What are some things I need to start with, ie, maintenance, mods, etc. AND what cool interior/exterior mods have you made? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!!!!

in all honesty and my opinion, its doesnt matter if you have the xe or se. some have leather seats, some dont. some have 6 cd changers, some dont. some are supercharged, most arent. the only 2nd gens have trim levels to pay attention too because of the factory e locker in the offroad/pro4x models.

as for maintenance, make sure you get your timing belt replaced if it hasnt been already. 100k-110k is when they got to get changed. as for mods, brower the build thread section here and browse threw some builds. there is really only few ways to build first gen Xterras.

welcome to the club, dont forget youre here forever.

however i will say this, the only thing ive seen to tell the difference is the SEs will have an SE badge on the hatch next to the Xterra badge.

This is it.

The SE trim level on the 1st gen was mainly just color differences, 02-04 got a darker colored rack, different wheels, white face gauges, etc. It was an appearance package more than anything else. Unless you got the supercharger. Which was only available on the SE trim level and only available in 02-04.

1st rule of mods. Find something that you want the truck to do that it doesn't do currently. That sets you on the path to modification.

First Fill-Up (of many)
In terms of maintenance, this is what I’ve had to do...2002 SE 4x4
New shocks, originals were cooked, decided to with a longer length to go with a custom suspension lift. Had to remove the rear sway bar to fit new shocks.
Added leafs to the rear pack, to allow for more cargo weight capacity. I also installed Timbren SES system for same
New rear rear shackles to facilitate lift. PML.
Upper and lower ball joints. lowers were worn so I decided to replace the uppers as well as new upper control arms to accomplish front suspension lift.
Added steering stabilizer kit just because.
New brake pads. Front
New heater hoses, one split on a trip. Replaced both. Did a rad flush while I was at it.
New oil pan. Had a leak since I bought it, thought it was the rear main seal, turned out to be leaking oil from 3 small holes in the pan. That was a hell of job with all the wrong tools.
Fixed gas tank leak, rusted through near the rear hanger bracket, seems quit common.spiderpatch is your friend.
Also replaced spark plugs, rotor and wires.
New tires, LT 265,75,16 Falken Wild Peak AT3w, what I bought it with were crap and the wrong size.
Painted some of the trim
Fixed one of the fog light wiring harnesses
This is all in one year, keeping in mind that this is a 16 year old truck. I’m the third owner.
Some interior mods that keep me camping.
