More clutch issues

I've been having a kind of grinding feeling for a while now. It hasn't been that bad and not all of the time, for the last year or so. It feels like I have shifted into a higher gear too early. Very low rumble/growl. I haven't been driving the X very much over the last year so I didn't worry about it. When I did drive the X, I thought it may just be Michigan's sh!tty roads... Well I've been driving the X a lot lately and it has gotten MUCH worse. It does it no matter if the clutch is pressed or not, no matter if I'm in gear or not, especially if I am slowing down or the rpms are matched to speed (very bad). Now over the last week, now that it warm enough to drive with the windows down, I notice that the gears are making contact when the clutch is pressed or even out of gear it still does it. I know my fluid/level is good. Throw out bearing going? The clutch itself grabs just fine. I can put it in 4th or 5th from a dead stop and it still tugs just fine. It shifts into 2nd and 3rd poorly, gears make contact even with clutch pushed all the way down. I'm moving to Texas somewhat soon so I would rather this not cost TOO much to fix. I think I'm pretty capable enough to fix myself as long as the whole transmission doesn't have to be dropped. Could the transfer case itself be having issues? Though I don't treat her right, the X is my baby so tell me what I need to do to keep her on the road.

Eesh..... From the symptoms you're describing, it sounds like two things.

1) Throwout bearing

2) 2nd and 3rd gear synchros

The constant grinding noise is more than likely just the bearing. That's not a huge deal. But if the 2nd and 3rd gear synchros are going, then it's going to need an overhaul.
