Gauge question

Im not sure if this is where this belongs or not but here goes...

I wanna add an oil pressure gauge and transmission temp. gauge to my xterra. So i've been looking at the gauge pod from 4x4parts and the differnet gauges they have. My question is though should I go with a mechnical gauge or an electric gauge? Im leaning mechnical but i dont know enough about them to decide for sure.

*Its time for an oil pressure gauge because I got an oil pressure light at 80 mph on the interstate the other day after going through a mud hole and getting the sensor water logged. I never lost oil pressure the sensor just shorted out on me which freaked me out big time lol

I would usually lean towards electronic, as it leaves the scorching fluids no where near my face. Considering you fouled the pressure sensor you might opt for the mechanical, but be prepared to add extra oil as you'll need to make up the volume in the hose going to the meter.

1) They do look the same

2) I would consider both equally reliable, just a preference to the situation. Maybe TJTJ has a better opinion?

3) Shouldn't be needed. Get a threaded 'T' from the plumbing section of your favorite home store and place the gauge sensor in one hole and the factory sensor in the

cool man thanx for the info.

I did some looking around clubx and like you said about its a matter of preference. I shorted the oil pressure sensor out while going through a hole that I was pushing water with the hood(I made that hole and will npt be going back through it lol). I never lost pressure, The light stayed on till the sensor dried out though. My x does see mud, but not extremely deep stuff. Do you think i would be good with an electric gauge? cause im not real sure about running a mechanical gauge into the truck with me

I have the 4x4parts.com pillar pod with a transmission temp and an air pressure guage (for my OBA)

I wasn't impressed with the fit/finish of the pod, but I was able to make it work in the end.

Any guages you install INSIDE the truck should be electric.

Mechanical guages are meant only to be installed outside the vehicle, example:

electric guages work fine, you get a sensor/sender unit that you install in the apropriate location,

my transmission temp guage sender is installed at the front, on the input side of my transmission cooler.

An oil pressure sender would mount where the factory one is located, or if you wanted to use both, just use a T-connection.

I think any electrical sensor can be made waterproof, and a hose with a factory crimp or a tight enough worm clamp can withstand 80psi (60@2000 rpm unloaded per spec).

I would probably still go with an electronic as you're running one or two wires through the firewall, vs a 3/8" hose, and you don't have to worry about adding extra oil or a bad hose clamp causing you to compromise your engine.

I love resurrecting old threads.

I just got my pilar gauge pod from 4x4Parts. And I agree. Not exactly thrilled with the fit/finish. Its definitely not an AutoMeter. That aside, Morpheus, what air pressure gauge did you get? I'm looking a few different options and can't really make up my mind.

Do you mean www.glowshiftdirect.com? Kind of looks like www.prosportgauges.com. Which is where I was looking at getting my voltmeter from. Only problem, they don't have a matching air pressure gauge. But, according to the tech support, I can use one of the oil pressure gauges but it only goes up to 100psi. Glow gift has an air pressure gauge, but only in the mechanical form and I really don't want to plumb an air line into my A-Pilar
