I have been searching around for a good exotic pet for my apartment next year, however I wanted to know what pets you guys HAVE or HAD.

I was thinking of getting a Bearded Dragon.. Like this one

Hmm, never owned a bearded dragon. I've owned snakes which are fairly easy to care for. Those two in the pics look aggressive.

I've had the full range of mini-zoo...

Sugar Glider (x2)
Snakes (Sinaloan Milksnake, Albino Cornsnake, Ball Python, Red Tailed Boa, Timber Rattlesnake, Water Moccassin, Copperhead...keeping in mind, the three poisonous are NOT good pets, we trapped them, kept them for a couple months until the local DNR guy came to pick them up and take for milking, and that was when I was YOUNG)
Hedgehog (x2)
Dogs, Cats, Fish, Turtles (box and snapper), some little cayman that a roommate brought home and kept for a while before realizing he's a moron for buying it, and a Red Bearded Dragon.

If you're looking for something that's low maintenance get a snake, if you get a beardy, they're a blast but get it as a hatchling, and handle it handle it handle it handle it! they grow upwards of 2' in body length, and are great fun as long as they're tamed to you handling them and they like you. If not, their bite is arguably one of the most painful I've experienced, second only to a tokay gecko. The cayman didn't even hurt as bad as those two. I was going to buy a tokay cause I like their coloration, love the sounds they make, and they're small, so, I reached into the tank at the petshop to fish him out because the dude that worked there was acting like a pansy and wouldn't (should have taken that as a clue, since he didn't hesitate to stick his hand in with the bigger snakes and actually got bit and shrugged and still grabbed the snake he was after, boxed it, and put it up). Yep, tokay grabbed me by the finger and I learned pain.

Morale of the story: don't buy a tokay. if you want to spend plenty of time with a reptile, get a beardy, they're fun. if you want to spend TONS of time with a rodent-like creature that makes noises at you, pisses out the side of its cage, craps out the side of the cage (seriously, get a catch all tray to put under it), but is the sweetest and softest creature you'll ever have, get a sugar glider, they rock, but, they require way more attention than a child, a wife, or a super needy girlfriend.

those two in the pics were probably posturing, mine did it all the time, I reached down and pet him and picked him up anyway...it's like any other guy trying to act big and bad and tough ;)

i just sold my beardies. they are very awesome. i have a batch of eggs coming up soon. to bad you didn't live closer i'd give you some for free. but beardies are very very easy to take care of and have a pretty good temperament. my male was just over a foot and he would go on rides in my x and just chill on the dash staring people down.lol

AZ, why did you get rid of them? I was wanting something for a tank I have but not sure if I have what it takes to care for such exotic pets and so I have decided not to persue it at this point.

I have a 45 gallon fish tank that is about to get on my nerves with the cleaning routine that I just want it gone at this point.

get a snake then, you feed it once a weekish, make sure it has water, and its temp and humidity are to its liking, and then you're done. I'd say go for a corn/milk/king snake, they're pretty, easy to care for, and don't get very big, that 45gal tank is almost twice what you need for them for size so they'll be in heaven.

I don't really like snakes, we have one house cat and one we inherited when we bought our house so whatever we get has to be compatible. My wife now wants a hamster, keep in mind that she wanted the house cat and the fish and I have to stay on her butt to keep up with them and they would all starve if I did not feed them myself. I guess I should consider myself lucky that she does feed me everyday so I guess I can't really complain...but I still want too!

don't really like snakes? hmm....well, I'll say my snakes were always fantastic entertainment for the cats....they loved cuddling up by the tank (it was warm) or laying close to watch the snake crawl around and be curious

Over the years I have kept all sorts of cool stuff, crested and leopard geckos, pueblan milkshakes, bearded dragons, skinks, and my favorite are my saltwater aquariums. I just tore down my 60g marineland cube reef. I also have a 30g cube dart frog vivarium.

I'm planning on putting either Dendrobates Leucomelas or a Ranitomeya in the viv.

you realize I'm gonna have to get you to come help me get a saltwater tank started right? I've got either a 75gal or 90gal tank with stand just sitting out in my storage shed waiting for me to decide to pull the trigger and set it up....

Derek: that sounds like a plan, I love setting tanks up! I have a 20 long with sump and refugium and an aqua illumination controllable led that's just begging to be set up. I just don't have time right now haha

Jmac: if your really interested in a dart frog viv check out Dendroboard.com, there is a wealth of information to get you started in the hobby. I will tell you that it's very extensive to keep them, for all but the largest species you must feed baby fruit flies. The cultures are cheap and can last a while in the right environment but can get moldy. I buy all my supplies from joshsfrogs.com and plants from blackjungle.com.

RATT: post some pics, I'd love to see it!
