Dash gauges shut down... check engine light on.

Brand new here, picked up a 2000 X last week. Tonite running down the freeway about an hour I notice the temp gauge starting to bounce from cold to normal. Then out of nowhere, Speedo, rpm gauge and temp shuts down. Odometer goes blank and check engine comes on.

Shut truck off and back on, no change. Checked a few fuses (good), oil and coolant levels good. I'm 60 miles from house so it's still running, let's go.

Get headed back about 20 miles later everything pops up working again. Check engine still on.

Ok, I'm home and hitting Google. Apparently, there's a heat issue in dash when dimmer is at full backlight. Error code according to Google is speed sensor and the problem is the circuit board in dash is overheating. Solutions I'm reading are turn dimmer down, replace circuit board ($$), or replace bulbs to leds.

Anyone had this issue. I'm looking for the absolute fix as Google has a lot of different answers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, there appear to be some thermal issues with the gauge cluster on the 2000. Pull the cluster and insulate it and it appears to help. LEDs help too.

Been a while since I've seen this question...

I had the same thing happen to me but instead the whole dashboard went out and never turned on. To make a long story short the fix is check fuse under the dash labeled "Meter". If its gone your dash board will not work. If this Meter fuse is blown your alternator will also not charge. If you loose your dash board the alternator will stop charging. You will find this out in about 2 hours when your truck stops to run and dies.
