Well last weekend me and the grandsons went wheeling with a buddy of mine in a little spot we know.
Heard a clunk and lost drive on driver side front wheel (I have a Lokka).
Figured I blew the auto-hub.

Took it apart today and cleaned it,looks perfect.

Then I found the problem........

That's a new one, I'll be interested to see what it looks like when you take it out... I wonder If the locker did stress it to much... I've blown hubs and ring gears but never hurt a cv

CV's go all the time, especially in a lifted rig with no diff drop, but, they go on stock rigs as well, its just a stressed part when wheeling in general.

I blew one at ~ 400k miles, and I haven't blown one since, but its still a possibility, so, I carry spares. If you go to A zone, etc, where the parts have a lifetime replacement warranty, you hand them the busted one and get a new one.

I used cardone select from rockauto.com ... 47 bucks plus shipping. I replaced both at the same time. My internals didn't blow, but the boot was shredded and throwing grease everywhere.

I thought they seemed really good quality when I was putting them in.

I broke an axle shaft on a saturn station wagon a few years ago, just pulling out rom a stop. Hard to imagine but stupid stuff happens all of the time. It could have been from previous damage that just had to work itself out on it's own time. Good thing that they are easy to replace. I keep a couple of spares just for the same reason.

It's not a super hard job.. Should take a hour to hour and half to get done.

And the gen 2 is super easy ;-)

Be careful to not break the bolts that hold the axle into the diff.. I seem to break those

jack it up and remover the tire, and locking hub to get to the c-clip

pull the pin in the upper ball joint, and take off the castle nut. seperate upper joint.

remove lower bolt on shock, and the six bolts holding the axle to the diff.

You will have enough room to remove the axle.

reverse to install new.

wash hands and put away tools.

I Second this. I carry 2 spare axles at all times. You guys on here that have never broke one should be ashamed of yourselves, how dare you even claim to call yourselves offroaders haha. I bet ya'll still got sway bars on too right? Grow a pair. Do yourself a favor and dont put the C clips back on, its retarded. You might have to hopninside and shift into 4WD to get the dif to stop spinning the axle upon install. I picked up a nice swivel socket from SK to slap on some extensions to make swapping axle out a breeze. My record time without trying is 25 minutes w no power tools and everything torqued at the end. I can walk ya through it but the guy above said it perfectly.
