Badge removal/painting/reinstallation

Just wondering how difficult it is to remove the front Nissan emblem on the hood, and the XTerra emblem on the rear hatch. I would like to paint them to match my plastics (gradually blacking out all the chrome/silver/grey/trim, including the roof rack). Are the emblems held on with the same tape as the side moldings, or are they pinned on and bolted on the backside? My X is a 2004, so if there is any variance year to year that is the year I need info for. Thanks Nation!

I believe the rear is glued on. Don't know about the front as I'm a 2001

I taped off the rear Xterra badge and used a razor blade to pull it off with..
Super glued it back on... (See turk build)

But I now know the awesomeness off plasti dip..

Works better.. no need to tape anything off.. peel off the area you dont want painted

Both Xterras front grills are plasti dip now..

The hood emblem on my '04 was held on with double-sided foam tape. I used fishing line to "saw" through it, between the emblem and hood.

There are two mounting pins formed into the back of the emblem that align it onto the holes in the hood, so if you use the fishing line method you'll have to do the top half and bottom half separately to work around the pins.

I reinstalled mine with some industrial 3M double-sided tape. Not the foam stuff.

Of course. Hit it with a 120 grit sanding pad and sprayed it w/ Rustoleum Professional Flat Black. I didn't sand it until all the masking was done so that I wouldn't hit the paint surface. And I ended up doing 3 light coats on the paint. It's held up great.

The hardest part was getting the masking INSIDE the badge. Lots of little pieces of tape and lots of patience.

Just took off the XTerra emblem on the back - didn't realize it was heavy duty vinyl; always thought it was plastic. Any suggestions on what type of adhesive to use when remounting it?

Bedlined the emblems - looks good! Used 3M automotive bade adhesive to reattach. Also bedlined the top of the rear bumper, the part that looks like a step.
