Ive been neglecting to change the ATF in my trans for a little bit ( not time, or something always comes up). I am planning a camping trip in a couple months and now descided that fresh fluid is a must. Now I've read the how to that rook wrote up to perfomr the PMF ( Both on here and on TNX) and if i did this myself just for fluid alone it would cost me around $150 Canadian for Matic S. going to the sealership would cost me $250 for a drain a fill and 5 liters ( about half the fluid required) and if i go the the Great Canadian Oil change place ( chain quick lube shop http://www.gcocltd.com/services/service3) they say that they can do a flush for $119 plus aplicable taxes, they use a Valvoline ATF that is supposed to be compatible with Matic S.

My conscers is that they use one of those transmision flush machines. I can't remember were I read this but I though that it wasn't recomended to use these.

any advice ???

the only real reason I am not doing the PMF is cause I don't have a place to work on the X that is level enough and I am not a fan of crawling under the X when it;s sitting on the road.

Generally with our transmissions it's best to just get it done however you can. I paid for the local lube place to do it and it cost me, but I'm happier with it than I would have been with a PMF.

what do you mean by it cost you??? as in because you had to pay them a lot for the service or because they messed up your trans???

from what I hear, if you'll just drain, drop pan, replace filter, replace pan, and refill you're doing quite a bit of good, the PMF is to clear EVERYTHING, and, unless your fluid is crap, you don't usually need to go that far....

I ended up going to that lube place and getting everyting done. WRT to do a drain and fil vs PMF vs havign a shop do the flush. the reason I did the flush was becaus of doing alot of towing at the max range of the X and the wheeling and severe weather that I run my rig I wanted to have everything replaced with new fluid. good thing the ATF looked more like used engin oil then the red ATF that people are used to seeing. so far I have had it done over a month now and have not had any adverse symptomes

as far as taking it to a lube shop, just ask if they do it as a reverse flow or a forward flow, if forward flow, they're fine, if reverse flow, biiiiiiiig no no, you're sucking all the sediment up into the valves and back up into the transmission, and can cause lots of issues, if forward flow, you may as well have just done it in your driveway... two clean 5 gallon buckets, put 12 qts in one, the other empty, take and attach an inlet line from the 12qts of new to your cooler, and the outlet line to the empty bucket, turn truck on, idle, at 4qts and 8 qts shift through the ranges with a couple seconds pause at each gear, should be good.

it was a forward flow slush, the issue is up here in my area, you got to pay evironmental fees when you buy your oil, and then you want to get rid of the old stuff they charge you again with the environmental fees and to get rid of the old oil. everything added up to being more expensive doing it myself then letting that shop doing it for me.

and as for going to Walmart or Canadian tire and leaving the jugs of oil in front of the garages, they set up security cameras and try to charge people that do that. Stupid yes, willing to get charged No

that's dumb....I can just walk into autozone with the old fluid and they collect it for free....
