My pulley seized up and started smoking, I barely made it home. Is it easy to do? At least I think its my alternator. its the pulley right underneath the airbox. on the drivers side on the 1st gen.

From the quick change out on the two I know of at nXm2 this year it can be done fairly easily. 1.5-2 hr job. Yes under the airbox driver side

I have not seen a how-to thread on the alternator. However, it's a pretty straight forward swap. Especially if you swap out the same type. When I did mine I upgraded to a Quest alt so I had to do a little alteration to the new alternator. But you go in thru the D/S wheel. Loosen the tighting bolt, remove the belt. Remove the bolts that holds it on. Remove the 3 wires. Reverse the process install. You don't have to remove the tire but it gives you more room if you do. At least this is what I did, others may have done it differently. Good luck.

If you put a quest alternator on, get a new ground bolt for it. The Xterra bolt is not the same, but Mirage and I found an engine bolt that was the same, took my install a little while longer because of it.

I found out its the ac compressor, and I am seeing that its just a compressor to idle pulley so I can just cut it and disable it. I havent had AC for a while so I wont be missing anything.

Well, there goes about $400 (compressor, refrigerant, proper draining, etc). I've done it so let me know if you need any pointers.

ok but I havent had ac for 3 years, I am thinking of cutting the belt but I am not sure about the main pulleys that are beneath the fan. I think and it looks like it is the main pulley that would spin it, I have 3 belts and this is just to the ac, idler and one of the big ones that is on the bottom.

If you ditch the ac compressor you could in theory remount the alternator up that 6" higher. I was thinking about it after I replaced the last one and kinda eyeballed everything and I dont think it would be to bad of a swap. Alot of jeep guys do a similar mod on the Cherokees, which have a similarly retarded low alternator. Just a thought though.
