2001 Clutch problems

Hello,

My clutch will hit the floor and not return, stalling the car. I added more fluid, and it was fine. Slowly it leaked back out. Rinse n' Repeat. Now, after about 4 weeks dealing with this, the clutch doesn't fully engage even when full of fluid. Seems like not enough pressure.

1. How can I troubleshoot this to find root cause?
2. How hard is the repair if I end up needing a new master or slave cylinder? I have done the timing belt + other goodies, so rate it on a scale relative to that repair.

EDIT: I should have said that I am on my second master cylinder. OEM one went bad at about 80K, got a new one (non-OEM) and has been great since then. I'm at 140K now.

Thanks guys & gals I really appreciate your help.

1st, Clean around the master, lines and slave. It's much harder to find a leak if the areas not clean. Fill up the master, and give a good dusting of baby powder to the areas. Start pumping the clutch. A leak should be pretty evident in the baby powder.

I can't answer about changing the slave out, as I'm an AT. I don't even know where the slave is.

Look for a puddle under the truck. The slaves I had that went bad literally squirted fluid and couldn't hold pressure. The masters were more difficult as they seemed to leak into the cab under the carpet. Sadly all the nonOEM ones I bought were garbage and seemed to go out frequently. Both the master and the slave.

Master cylinder is leaking, from underneath. I cleaned it up and let it sit for a day, and there was a bunch of fluid on the bottom of the master assembly, and had dripped off down into the engine bay.

I have to have my car working this weekend for a trip i have been planning. I work long hours, and I spend what little time I have left on the weeknights with my wife. Weekends are my only time to get stuff done.

So I had to take it in to get fixed. Took it to a highly recommended Nissan specialist in my area. Quoted me 400 out the door for Master, slave, and hose. All OEM replacement. He also said he would try to see if he could tighten the valve covers to reduce the leak I'm having there.

Parts on courtesyparts.com are prices as follows:

Master - 98
Slave - 78
Hose - 21

So that means 200 for parts, and 200 for labor.

Just thought I would update in case someone searched for clutch problems. Also, do you think this is a fair deal?
