I used phosporic acid on an old VW bus- decades ago, and painted with rustoleum. On a Honda Element I sprayed the surface rust with Locktite rust neutralizer and then spray painted over it- Thtats what I will do on my 2001 Xterra- after first hitting the rust with a wire brush

Thank you all- I am glad I landed in this forum- since 2014 I have been active on the HHR, Avalanche, Honda Element, Dodge Journey/minivan forums. The Element was a bit dangerous to drive, IMO, due to the subpar cockpit visibility and high center of gravity/short wheelbase. No problems like that...
