Xterra Powa! And Mpg boosters

If you haven't noticed yet the 1st gen xterra's are no powerhouse.. with the 3.3l bringing in 175ish hp and the vehicle weight being 4500+ pounds its no drag racing machine.. But there are a few things you can do the pep the motor up a bit.. And these will also help the mpg's

1. Swap out that flimsy paper filter for a K&N, they last for a long long time and are serviceable so they can actually save you some $$ in the long run.
2. Switch to Synthetic oils, Not just in your motor but your differentials and transmission, they will help reduce friction and keep heat down.
3. Exhaust, there are several different bolt on kits out there, or seek out your local muffler shop for something more free flowing, I have the flowmaster 40 series it added a nice deep tone.
4. I know this is beating a dead horse but seriously keep the tires inflated! Properly inflated tires will reduce rolling resistance.
5. Plugs and wires, How many miles do you have on the odometer? These should be changed out by 100,000 miles.
6. Timing belt. 2000-2004 Xterras have a timing belt, not a chain like newer models. These need to be Serviced every 105,000 miles if your getting close to this mileage this is something you need to look into it will keep your truck running right for a long time.

Now those are some basic things to help keep it running right and a few mods to do for little money. If you have a little extra dough you can look into things like Headers, and Electric fan swaps. These tasks may be a bit much for the beginner to tackle but will also increase power quite a bit... especially on the low end.

It did help a bit.. But after I put it in I stopped driving the xterra daily and so it really doesnt have many miles on it yet... I will be taking it on a long trip for thanksgiving so that will be its real test

I added NGK Iridium IX plugs and NGK wires a few months ago and they have helped out a decent amount. I gained about 1.5-2 mpg's.

Id like to do an electric fan swap this summer too, Iv heard that adds some mpg's.

Hey, what about the resonator delete? I gained a couple ponies from that, and a nice throaty tone under the hood.

BTW, +rep for this thread.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I get on the interstate (usually in 4th gear) my truck seems to LAUNCH like a rocket. Even in 5th, if I go to pass someone, I can step on it and go. I know that having a manual trans will give me a little more oomph on takeoff, but still...I'm amazed every time I do.

I also average 15.7mpg on every fill up, even if I keep the RPM under 2500. I'm hoping to do the res delete in January (as I'll be commuting about 45mi one way to school twice a week) and do a full tune up as well.

I did the Res delete, K&N, added NGK Iridium plugs, and RP throughout (Tranny, Difs, T Case, Engine). I also Seafoam I'm getting 23-24 mpg highway, 15-16mpg city if I drive careful. With the S/C I DO find her really peppy, 2nd-4th over 2500rpm she cooks. I'm planning the electric fan this summer, as well as possibly a Header Back exhaust revamp.

So you get around 450 miles to a tank on the highway?

If you're getting 23-24 mpg hwy in a first gen, something may be wrong. Sounds like you may be running lean. Recheck your calculations and make certain that nothing's wrong before there's some permanent damage to the engine.

Unless, of course, you've put your X on a diet and it's lost 500-1000 pounds. That might explain it. Or you might have a factory freak! :)

Other than buying the electric fan.. what else is involved in doing the e-fan swap? I haven't found many writes ups on them.. If I could find an e-fan somewhere.. it would be nice to do a swap..

You'll need a 3000 cfm fan, a thermo controller to tell it when to cycle on and off, a shroud either custom fabbed or find something to fit, and a switch to manually turn it off.
