I have been looking at getting my first hand gun, It will mostly be a range gun with concealed carry in the future. Im torn between the gen 3 Glock 23 and the XDm compact .40. Which would you choose and why? I have looked at both and they feel very good in my hands, the xdm feels a bit better but I havent shot either yet.

I've shot with both a Glock (don't remember the specific model, but it was a 9mm, probably the 19) and the XDm .40. I'm quite partial to Springfield having a 1911 myself; however, the reliability of Glocks are what I like about them. I thought about this same thing about a month ago and decided I liked the XDm a little more because of the comfort it had. I'm well aware that grips are somewhat modifiable, but the XDm I held had me questioning my 1911 (before I got it).

Thanks that's the kind of answer I was looking for, I have held 1911's and they just aren't comfy in my hands at all. They feel like a brick imo.

I've shot both. I've never been particularly fond of Glocks, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but the XDM in .40 is one of the sweetest shooting automatics I've ever shot. The only thing that's ever come close was an original FN Browning Hi-power. But if you don't like a 1911, the Hi-power will never feel comfortable in your hands either.

Had a glock 26 and sold it, didn't like the grip. I have an XD sub compact and really like it, very interested to see what the new single stack xds is like once it hits the store shelves.

Yellow is right about the new XDM single stack .45. I do wonder how it will fell when you shoot it. I have a XD .45 service model and love it, the recoil on my .45 is less than some 9mm that I have shot.

My advice is as with any gun if you can shoot it first and see how it works for you that would be best.

Then get you permit and carry everywhere the law allows. :)

Narrow it down to the 2 or 3 you like and go shoot them.....buy the one that fits you best. That is really the only answer.

Why .40 cal? What does it do that other rounds will not? I have a owned a few .40 cal handguns from different manufacturers and have sold all of them for the single reason that they just have a lot more muzzle flip then 9mm or .45 and slow down the second shot. If I were forced to own a .40 cal again it would not be a Glock. The unsupported chamber fears of the .40 cal Glocks is not a trivial matter it is a genuine concern. I could fire 10 rounds from my Glock 22 and mix them in with 90 other cases fired from non-Glock .40 cal handguns and sort through the pile and pick out my 10 cases just by looking at the bulge left in the case by the unsupported chamber.

I am no Glock hater, I carry either a 19 or 30 daily, but IMHO the .40 cal is not the best choice and a .40 cal Glock is definitely not the best choice.

Being my first handgun I was planning on avoiding a .45, but want more stopping power than a 9 since this will serve double duty as a cc/target gun.

11pro4x: I actually really like the usp too, very comfortable! It is just a tad bit more than I am wanting to spend. if I could find a good condition used usp locally I would buy in a heartbeat.

Having owned both the Glock 27 (subcompact .40) and the sub-compact XD .40, I would have to say I would prefer the XD.
Glocks apparently have the reliability, but I have never had a single issue with my XD with ANY type of ammo, not sure how many rounds total, but at least 1000+.

I went to a gun show today and talked to a few local sellers, everyone I spoke with said that a 9mm would be the way to go. Since this is my first gun it might be a better idea to go with a 9mm, just for the sake of higher capacity. I have a lot to think about.

Own 3 glocks, but can't say I really like them (just got great deals on all of them). Carry gun is now mostly a G23 due to size /weight.
Fav's for accuracy are my 1911's.

That being said, I have a new XDM 5.25 on layaway for IPSC / IPDA competitions in 9mm (cheap ammo!)

I am in the same boat as the OP. I have been considering the G22 40cal and getting the 22 alternate barrel for practice because the ammo is super cheap and easy to find. Opinions?? :)

XDM all the way, more safety = more better....match grade barrel and trigger assembly out of the box too....

BUT....if it's your first gun, and you're being cost conscious....lets go shoot my new one sunday....

Laura and I have a great private dealer who has nice deals price-wise...(Beretta PX4 9mm around $550 I think he said?)

sure can, text me what barrel size, and what caliber, and what color scheme you want and I'll check to see if they're in stock at his distributor level and what your pricetag is ;)

If you haven't noticed the regular XD is cheaper than the XDm. From my understanding the only difference is the barrel and trigger. My opinion is unless you are doing competition shooting or have a reason for the match grade barrel and trigger the regular XD is a perfectly fine.

As for which one you should get, try them out. Several of the shops here have ranges were you can rent and try it out before you buy it. The rental fees get applied to your purchase once you have come to a decision.

Picked up my XDM 9mm yesterday. Fondled it a bit. Changed out the blackstrap to the biggest one for my man hands.
Took it to the pin shoot last night to try it out. Shot one clip before the competition started. Tweaked the sight in a tad. Not a bad shooter.

I typically shoot a maxed out kimber .45 that I usually win with (comp barrel, laser, massaged, etc).
Shot the XDM as a second gun.
Having to adjust to the trigger/grip of the new one took me out if my game a bit on the kimber and I ended up second place :-(

Took 20th out of 40 on the XDM, but a lot of that is due to the 9mm not having the energy (and only 115gr bullets) to knock the pins off of the table like the .45 does, leaving me with penalties on a couple rounds out of 8 rounds. Pins get very heavy & lumpy as the night goes on.

Pretty happy with it and even impressed the guys shooting a pin 3 times as it went off the table on the way to the floor.
Kinda my signature thing to hit the last pin a second time as its going down, per zombie land rule #2- The double-tap!

Great gun and now gotta get more mags, holster and mag holders for IPSC !!!

very nice ;)

ahefner, as far as XD vs XDm, always XDm, it's got the changeable backstraps, lighter trigger pull, match grade barrel, the "compact" is a 3.8" barrel, so, it's only .2" shorter than the normal length XD, and price difference isn't that much at all.

gobuffs, did you ever decide when you're getting it? :p

Anyone found anywhere to get black mags?

for your XD? yes, a little scotchbrite, some black spray paint and VERY VERY fine coats until your level of "stealthy mags" is attained. make sure you disassemble the mag first, and then cover the entire inside with masking tape, so that nothing gets inside the mag.

That's what I was afraid of....can't say that I've ever disassembled a mag before..

uh.....should be easy....on my taurus, there's a little catch that you push in with a pen or whatever, and slide the plastic "foot" off of the magazine, and catch the piece that the catch was part of which is attached to the bottom of the spring when it shoots out and hits you. take this time to clean and oil your spring, clean any burrs off of the piece that rides at the top of the spring (pushing your ammo upward) and oil it lightly as well, tape, spray, let dry, lightly sand, repeat process until you're happy with the magazine, then if you want to protect it as much as possible, go to a hobby store (like a RPG store, someplace that carries a bunch of stuff for the little warhammer wargames, and they have some matte sealer spraypaint that's made for metal, put yourself about 4 coats of that on with a gentile sanding with some super-fine grit sandpaper to make sure it's nice and smooth. make sure you don't go too thick with the paint lest you make them not fit in the magazine well very nicely. you don't want them sticking if they're supposed to be drop-free mags...

I get my .45 from where ever around town. I did a bulk buy on .223 from AIM http://www.aimsurplus.com/

Oh you are close to the Barrett's shop on 24. they sell wolf ammo there for the .223 at the same price as what I payed bulk if I remember right.

Looking for 9mm target and at least 124gr JHP +P LE of some kind for work/duty carry. I just don't know what to go with. I've heard different opinions on different rounds...just wanna shoot it and see what I like.

For targets, Dad has always shot Winchester white box.

That looks sweet. Too bad it says Glock on it. I would just never own a Glock. Maybe if I was in law enforcement just for reliability purposes. Everyone and there dog owns one, and they feel weird in my hands.
