Im not sure about everyone else but when winter rolls around bad drivers driving just gets worse due to the weather. Im a generous person and love to help people so this is a thread about stuff you see, do, help, etc, this winter.
On my way home from eating with some friends tonight (its midnight) a older lady had run her cadillac into a ditch and half her car was over the cement curb that led to a gas station drive in. I told her I could get her car out but wasn't responsible to damage done by the curb cause she's the one who put the car there. A f150 had a 4,000lb tow strap out when I got there, I stop the guy and said that was dangerous and to save it for his ATV's. Mine is only a 8,000lb strap and I'm nervous as heck when I use it. I began to pull her car using my front tow hook, you could here it rubbing the curb and I knew I would have a problem once that tire caught the curb, I was really going to have to use some power to get it over cause the wheel was hanging over it not touching ground. She got all nervous and made me stop. A long story made short she wanted to pay a tow truck to do what I was doing... I wanted to snap a pic but with 5 cops around I said forget it. Last winter I only had to pull 3 cars back onto the road with my jeep so I want to see what the X can do!
Post up!!

In situation like that I rather leave it to the tow truck too, the "professional". Rather take on the task and may cause further damage to their car which could lead to suit.
I'm sure somebody will share their part of the story how they may already encountered that or know someone that did.

Kudos to you for trying Aaron! I've got a story like that and I'll post up all about it on my one year anniversary of having the X in January. It's a pretty good story and it's worth waiting for.

It was a nice offer Aaron and good thing you showed up, I don't think a 4000 lb strap could pull a high-centered Cadillac without a possibility of snapping. You deserve a pat on the back.

Not even a winter adventure...more like a dead-of-summer adventure in the Titan..

So Karen and I are camping for a few days at Fall Creek Falls (Google it, it's amazing), and we're coming back from an all-day hike to find a Chevy C1500 backed off into a ditch all the way up to his running boards. We're in the Titan (my Pathfinder wasn't gonna make it to Fall Creek Falls and back) and I see a Suburban tying up traffic trying to yank this thing out...obviously, it wasn't working. He had too much weight and not enough torque/hp to do it. SO...I roll the window down and offer our services. Suburban moves out of the way, I hook up, and EASE it out in 4L. Probably could have done it in 2wd, but I didn't want to rip off the running boards. I got a firm handshake and an "atta girl!" out of it....

...and I showed up the guy in the Suburban by doing it on the first try. Apparently, they had been pulling on that thing for an hour before I showed up and did it in 30sec. Bwahahaha.

I know that me trying to pull it out could start a law suit and I should be aware of the risks, but this lady understood that there wasn't a way to get it out without it scrapping it up. So we agreed to let the tow truck do it. The reason I stop is first to make sure everyones ok, then I see if I can help.

Well, in Winter 2010 my Xterra got stuck in a ditch.. Was driving one night on this 2 lane road. The roads were covered in about a good inch of ice/snow. Had my 4 wheel drive engaged and was trucking along when a gust of wind slid me into a ditch. I slide through the ditch for about a good 300 feet before stopping. What made me stop? A huge snow bank. My xterra was so far in the snow that i could not open my doors or anything. Had to crawl out of the window to asses the mess.. Luckily, thanks to Nissan's 4x4 engineering, I dropped her in 4lo and she pulled out with ease.. Funny part that I left out is I was sitting in the ditch for 3 hours freezing because I forgot my Xterra had 4lo... :(

Here's the post I promised.

So I can't for the life of me find the thread that had something about winter driving in it even after searching several different ways. SO, I don't think I've shared this story before but I may be mistaken.

A year ago I'd only had my Xterra for a month and it snowed something fierce here. The snow wasn't sticking much but it was blowing like crazy and visibility was in and out. Being an extra cold day I stopped at a convenience store about 5 lots away from our office for a cappuccino and some chips. As I was pulling away from the store I had zero visibility and put my wheels a little too far to the right and ended up bumping the curb and sliding in the ditch.

Fortunately for me there was plenty of snow in the ditch. I tried reversing out to no avail. Put it in four-wheel drive and tried that as well. I then proceeded to try and drive my way out and ended up putting the Xterra on the front and rear bumpers. I literally could spin all 4 of my wheels. I was offered help from a guy who wanted to jerk me out from the back but I didn't have a rear recovery point and that actually worked out best because looking back now he probably would have torn something up.

I ended up having frost nipped fingers and I will remember that feeling for the rest of my life! I never ever want to have frost bitten fingers or toes. I was referred to as "Crash" by my co-workers and the employees at the convenience store for a long time. In fact there is still a lady at the convenience store who only calls me Crash. It's actually really funny now. The X was fine but my pride was hurt.

heh, I got to pull a buddy's ford raptor out after that little bit of snow we had, he did exactly what you did...and I didn't even put the X in 4wd...front hook and a 30K recovery strap, had it figure 8'd on the frame with a clevis to hold it in place, no tire slip or anything...I don't plan on letting him live down my under 30K nissan recovering his over 50K ford ;) then again, I was surprised there wasn't much damage, he got pretty ticked and traded it in after that....citing "it couldn't even get out of a ditch, how can it possibly be this amazing offroad vehicle" and got a tacoma instead

agreed, he's just a spoiled tw@ and I have a hunch he realized that payments on the raptor were WAY more than he could afford, so, the step down to the taco was a bit of a financially strategic move. I was trying to convince him to get a P4X Titan so I could ninja his front diff and swap it with mine ;) but, now that there's an ARB, I no longer want the titan diff ;)
