Working for a major distribution center has its times. After quite a busy period, we were informed yesterday we have a few slow weeks upon us. Looking at 6 hour shifts only. They offered VTO for the upcomming week. Thats unpaid time off. If you can afford it.

I took just one day. Monday. Some took the whole week. Now this can change. More product etc.... Some of the temps got laid off. Worse gets to worse i will open a claim for partial unemployment. Really bad timing. With a decent tax return due monday, looks like i will not be spending it on a whim.

Just something to deal with. Never seems like a happy medium. Either your working 45-50 hour weeks or not enough to pay the bills. Been there 5+ years now, so really have seen it all. This is TEMPORARY.

Who do you work for? Maybe it product the rest of us may want to consume? Which ultimately helps you out...

I feel your pain. I work in an industry that can have there similar ups and downs. I've been there 4 years now and it nice to know I'm not on the bottom of the totem poll to be laid off in slow times. But I can go from making great money to mediocre overnight. Its hard to plan anything the one thing I have done since all these ups and down is have a emergency cash fund and base all my finances on the less of the two. So when I'm making great money I can save and spend and such. But when I'm slow I can still pay all my bills and not dig into any of these accounts. This way If I do get laid off which is always a possibility it will suck but suck less. For the last 6 months I've been working 200+hrs in two weeks and 80hrs for two weeks back and forth. Now I have been cut to 80hrs per two week check. Got the email last night at 8pm. This may not seem bad but my pay is based on working a lot of overtime on a 2week 14+hr days and 2weeks of nothing. The biggest thing that drives me nuts is I can't plan vacations, trips, projects at home. Everything has to be flexible which I don't like. I guess if you know this is temporary get some of the projects done at home that you have been putting off until it picks back up.
