OK you GEN1 owners serious inquiry here or as serious as I can get on XN...lol

If you had the lucky oppurtunity to get (2) two sets of tires one for off road and 1 for on road... what brand(s) would you get? Keep in mind each tire is on a rim so you just take one set off and put the other on.

Here's the lucky part... The tires wouldn't cost you anything... 2 completely free sets of 5 tires regardless of size.

Basically... would you be getting a great tires or would it be a popular name that you otherwise shouldn't/couldn't afford?

I do not look at my Xterra as a multi purpose SUV so I would only pick one tire...
Im thinking hard about switching back to BFG KM2 but in a 33 10.50 15R or maybe the Kumho MT

The duratracs are great for what you do too Greg.. Great all weather tire..

I was basically trying to see what folks would get if there wasn't the hinderance of a price. Are there other better tires out there that just simply cost too D@MN much like Cepek's or Thompson's. The same basic 3 are always mentioned by the same manufac. KM2's, AT's ect. I like the BFG AT's and the KM's, but I can efford those. Is there another style/maker that is better but just more expensive that put them out of reach? BLUE SKYIN here...

Check out INTERCO. http://www.intercotire.com/

There are kind of seen as the cream of the crop off road, don't know that they are always the best, but they have that hype going for them. They can be pretty purpose specific though, which is why I think you don't see them on anything but rigs dedicated to a particular style, be it a crawler, mudder, or desert runner, etc. Look at the TSL bogger, it's an example of a dedicated mud tire, aimed at professional use.

I had a set of TrXus STS on my Bronco, I went to BFG's simply because INTERCO tires are expensive, hard to find, and wear fast. (And I think the BFG's look better.)

I would get two sets of BFG KM2s size 285/75-16, then sell one set to help pay for a lift. I'm perfectly happy with the ones I have now on the street and trail so no need to have different kinds.

Cooper discoverer stts (for off-road use)

im running cooper discover st maxx's now (downside: only available in 16s and up)

* Id check into pro comp's too. My buddy has a set of the xtreme mud-terrains on his jeep, and those tires are killer... Good road manners too
*Cooper makes the rubber for pro comp tires

Right now BFG's are my first choice. I found a place that has some of the KO's and AT's at a real good price. However Coopers are a REAL close second after doing some comparisons. They were $10 more per tire.

Pro comp all terrain extremes for the summer weather if i had the cash...

And GT Radial Adventuro m/t for the winter weather.

Other than road noise on the gt's I can't complain... Nearly 35k miles from a mud tire isn't bad in my book. Including the beginning 21/32" tread depth.

I though he had the Mud dawgs or whatever 02xterra just out on his rig.

That would be the Cooper/Sigma Mud Claw, or the Wild Country MTX.

A buddy of mine is also running them on his XJ and loves them. No complaints. I've been very happy with them as well. I got 285/75/16s for $160 a tire.

For the cost and performance of them, my buddy and I have both been very impressed with them.

And at over 5,000 miles, they are wearing great too.

I had these on my F250 and LOVED them! I was hoping for a slightly more mpg friendly tire tho. The F250 had a 351 V8 and mpg wasn't even on its radar lol.

Wish more we're offered in 33x10.50-r15 I feel that's the perfect size for a expo daily driver who wheels tire. BFG's are a wonderful tire but the last 10 years I've owned nothing but the BFG a/t. Itching for new tread yet very little pleases me. Even less is offered in the size I want. Wish there was a XT type tire. Not a all terrain but not a mud terrain. I don't care for the duratrac tires.

Hey Ben,
Why don't you like them?

Duratracs? Just that goofy knobby over exaggerated sidewall. When they wear people say the tread sipes go away. I've heard good and bad. However, the deal breaker for me is the limited size options in a 15".

Just found a set on CL in a 285/75 16 that I really want. The only bad I have heard about them is the sidewall blowing out, mostly from Luke and Daves testimonies. I had plans to run 33 10.50 15s on my truck, but never had the change to put the rubber on the rims. I agree, I hate that more companies don't make tires that size.

Yeah I've heard the sidewalls are weak as well. Not sure but aren't they P rated tires? I've blown 2 bfg's sidewalls in the past 10 years from playing on rocks. Last thing I want is a thinner wall. BFGs are still the best overland tire easy to order at nearly any tire shop in the country. Wear like iron. Just wish they had more grip especially in the rain.

They would be a great overland tire... Like you when I cut sidewalls it was playing on rocks.. but yeah the sizes are a little weak.. 31 or 33

I will say the duratracs are wicked in muddy conditions. My front are shot from worn ball joints and a poor alignment.. back still look great with 20k on them.

Im going back to KM2's because of the type of off roading I do.. They seem to work the best and come oh... when you see the BFG on the side wall .. It just rocks :)

For free, those choices are easy.

I love the desert runner wheels. So I'd have to have two sets of those. On one set I'd have 33x12.50x15 GY MT/R's. They would be my dedicated trail tires. Hands down.

on the other set, my dedicated street tires, Michelin LTX AT/2 in 31x10.50x15.

Yeah, wicked smaller, but thats for less rolling resistance and Michelin tires are the ONLY tire that is truly round and they last FOREVER.

I guess thats kinda how I ended up w/ GY DuraTracs. They have great street manners, but work really well off road as well. And I don't have money for two sets of tires. heh.

Gonna be buying new tires before August. So I'm on college budget and my dad will split the cost with me. What should I get. Most on road driving but I do go off road a bit too.

Currently running these down

the Cooper STT's i'd recommend for offroad, but man driving out of town on them is rough on the wear. i'm rotating them quite often just to keep the wear even. on the road though they are just nice, its just the wear i'm not a big fan of, ill be switching back to toyos or ko's

I've been reading a lot about the Kenda Klever M/T. Nothing but good reviews so far. Very cheap on ebay $500 and some change for a set of 4. Looks aggressive but from the reviews sounds like a mild mannered mud tire.
