Wrong thread, but like posted below, check your oil.. could be valves..

Also check to see if any plastics are hitting your fan. I had a friend with a second gen who had a weird noise, turned out to be a plastic piece from the bottom hitting the fan (his was louder and intermittent, but check that as well)

don't think it is steering related sounds more like coming directly from the engine or the belts infront of it hard to tell even standing right there. the microphone to the camera is located along the right edge of the video screen if that helps at all.

The VG33 (and the KA24) will click/tick when either A) the engine is low on oil or B.) the oil is old/used/burned up. Check the level and quality of your oil.

Oil level appears fine. This is worrying me. I'm measuring it as between halfway and full on the dipstick. How do I know if it is used or burnt up I got it changed about 2400 miles ago

one thing to mention I do know that my valve covers leak, one thing I am tackling this summer, but the leak is not horrible I don't think it is anyway, there is no spraying or stream of oil coming from the gasket.

Valve lifters sometimes go bad and that does sound like a lifter tick but it's hard to tell from the audio... is the sound constant or does it go away sometimes?

Not necessarily, but if it’s a bad lifter you will probably want to replace it when you do your valve cover gaskets this summer (sooner will be better than later). They’re not hard to check once you have them out and they are really cheap to replace. Post again if you get that far and I’m sure that someone can help you figure out if one of them is bad.

When I first bought my X I was leaking a few drops of oil from loose valve covers and anti freeze from a blown head gasket. They tore down the engine and when I got it back my X ticked like a bomb because it didn't have all that oil build up because they cleaned it out during the tear down. Needless to say it took a few days to quit making this noise.

As you can tell it sounded bad but it was just the lack of oil build up around the lifters. My xterra makes a very faint tapping noise upon start up for a few seconds then stops...I have been told its normal. I would say take it to the shop and let them look at it and not run test so they don't charge you for crap that doesn't matter.

oh man its not NEARLY that loud you can faintly hear it with the hood closed, with it open it still isnt that loud I will have valvoline replace my oil tomorrow and maybe that will solve it. I usually change it myself but if I am trying to rule it out as an issue I want people who are paid to do it daily to do it right hopefully.

I wouldn't call that normal.

Acceptable? Maybe. Tolerable? Probably. But definitely not normal. Yours is clearly acting like it has a bad valve lifter. When lifters wear out or are mistreated during disassembly, air bubbles can form inside the lifter(s). When the engine is started, the oil pump forces oil up through the block and into the heads. Once the oil reaches the heads, it's channeled to the lifters through the valve guides:

The valve guides deliver oil to the lifters through a small hole in the middle of each lifter (geeze my hands look fat in this pic):

If an air bubble forms inside the lifter, the heads will "tick" until the lifter fills up again or the oil forces the bubble into a place where oil can flow around it. A lot of people live with this defect for years without problem, but it can be fixed.

I doubt it. It's a very common problem in older engines. Many people tolerate it for years without incident.

Just to clarify the ticking continued after startup until I turned it off after like 10 minutes

When it was time for my timing belt to be done mine made a ticking or chatterring type noise, it went away after changing the belt.

How many miles do you have on your belt?

Whole nother story I need to redo timing belt had it done at 93000 while my mom was driving it, here we are at 113000 miles the belt is too tight and making the whining noise. My mom says the Guy told her it was normal every time she asked about it and that it would stretch over time. NOT but to answer your question only about 20000 miles

I was going to ask the same ticking question.

2002 Xterra "ticking" noise
I had my hood open today while running my engine. I noticed a ticking sound. I'm not sure if this is common.

Anyone else experience the same sound? If not, what should I consider looking into repairing/replacing?

I also checked my oil level, and it's fine. So I don't believe it's the valves. I'm using Quaker State DEFY engine oil. I believe it's a synthetic blend and not a full synthetic.

I had a tick/rattle/peck on start-up until the engine warmed up. I thought the worst of all and was thinking rod bearings. I broke down and changed my T-belt 10K early, Glad I did had like 1" up/down slack between the cams. I still have a slight tick though. Hearing that video though. Id lean to lifter. Or manifold if it gets louder as you apply fuel.

I'll have to have my wife sit in the pilot seat and rev the engine. I don't hear any noise while driving. If it's either the exhaust manifold or even the lifters, it's a little above my skill level. I'll have to look into having someone do it for me.

Try flushing the oil. You can get some cleaner or oil flush at orileys for like 5 bucks. I had the same issue and it took care of my ticking. Its probably just trash in the lifter making it stick.
