Still have 18 vacation days left. The CO wanted everybody to have less than 12 days by 1 sept. But yet. Every time I want to take a week off people at my work want me to find a replacement for my position or they won’t sign off on my leave. Looks like I will keep my 18 days for Xmas and March break

We sign for full weeks. There's a side agreement that allows us to sign for one week of our total vacation as a day at a time. 4 days in my case. You have to get approval and there are limits to how many can be off from each shop at a time.

As long as my boss is around, I can take off whatever time I want provided I have earned the days (or am making them up later). We tried the "both off at the same time" trick about 10 years ago for Christmas, and one of our main servers imploded... And since we are the only 2 people at the office that know how to fix it...
More realistically, though, it is "as long as one of us can get to a decent internet connection in under 1/2hr", we can take vacations whenever we want. The joys of working for a small business where the boss makes sure everyone actually wants to come to work. I can't imagine being in a large organization where I am just another nameless meatbag doing things to keep a CxO happy and well-paid.

Industrial maintenance. I work 4x 10hr days so I only get 4 days "day at a time".
Weeks are earned by service time. 1-2 years = 1 week. 3-7 = 2 weeks, 8-11 = 3 weeks and 12-19 = 4 weeks and 20+ = 5 weeks. You used to get 6 weeks if you worked here 25yr but they did away with that a couple years ago.

I work for a small company as well. The owner understands that work is not number 1, it is more around 4 or 5 on the priority list. So they are very good with days off and vacations.
