Ok tech guys. Bought a new house. Biggest house I have ever had. Where should I put the router? First, second, or third floor?

if youre using mostly mobile devices or laptops, I'd say 2nd floor. if you have one main desk top and or home office, put it in that room.

All I know about mine is that I have to change the password on a regular basis to keep my kids friends off of it.

How big is the house? 3 stories, how many square feet? In order to be optimal, you might need an additional access point or two.

If it were me, I'd have the router in a central location and an access point on every floor.

Not sure, I could run those down. There is a heat chase that runs from the first floor through the attic where the vent pipe for the furnace is. I could potentially pull a wire to the top floor.

Heck yeah. I'd use that all day long to pull wire. If you get your router on one floor (wherever convenient) and then get a CAT5 or CAT6 cable from your router to each of the other floors for access points, you'll have ROCK solid reliable wireless with no compromise.

That being said, the router hardware goes a long way to making it work correctly. I feel I need to preface this next statement, because there are a lot of fanboys that will buy Apple products just because they're apple products. I am not one of those. I buy what works. And hands down the best residential router is the Apple Airport Extreme. Pair that with a few Airport Expresses and you'll never have network problems again.

(yes, there's a PC utility to set them up)

Different frequencies. If you have something that can use AC, then it will be faster and get better range. at this point, there's no reason to not get the latest and greatest.

You could just put new firmware on it and pump up the TX power. The best place is as close to the center of the house as possible. I have a dual band router in My house and it's in the dead center. I only have my gaming rig on my 5ghtz and every one else sucks it up with the 2.4

It varies....during the day its warm. Cause nobody is here. At night it drops to like 68. Because sleeping is sweaty. Normal is like 72ish when we're home.
