Best first engine mod for a 1st Gen X... Headers?

Over the counter mod? Yeah. I think so. You could port the intake and heads if you wanted to. But to my knowledge there are no larger air intake hardware (MAF sensor, throttle body) which would be nice.

Yeah. I was debating port and polish when I pull the engine for the overhaul.

I know I'm going to do something to it either way. Just was wondering on a general idea of what helps the most. (That is bolt on)

I'm going to need valve cover gaskets this winter.. I put it off last year but I have a steady leak on the passenger side now that's requiring me to put oil in it every time I get fuel. Leaking down onto the exhaust manifold, makes my truck look like it's on fire.

This is good news. Did you have to pull the intake, too?
I did pull the entire intake, and that sucks. Be prepared for the 5 upper intake bolts to suck and replace them. Also be prepared to cut the two coolant lines at the back. I spent more time trying to get _one_ of the clamps loose than any thing else (other 3 weren't too bad).

I've heard that it can be done without removing it completely, but the screws at the back of the cover will be a bear to get to.

Also, if you run into issues getting the upper intake bolts out with the Allen driver, grab a deep 12mm socket and beat the loving tar out of it onto the bolt head. Had to do 2 or 3 that way.
