Short version, reddit has decided to start charging for the access that all of the major, good reddit apps use, claiming to be targetting all these "AI" guys scraping their site to teach their systems. Said charging is going to likely cost some of these apps thousands or millions of dollars. Reddit gave them less than a month to deal with it. Said apps are common ones that a lot of the mods use as the default Reddit tools are garbage, so everyone is angry.

That's the long and short of it.

I use Reddit is Fun (Android) and it's really the only way I use it. That's Reddit to me. One of the claims was that they were going to charge Apollo (the top iOS app) $20.... Million.... To keep API access. For an app that is made and maintained by one dude, that's just absolute horse shiat.

The biggest problem is that the official Reddit app is hoooooot garbage. It's just bad. Everyone I know that has ever used it has sworn it off forever (myself included). Ads disguised as posts. Constant crashes. Some shiat won't even load that is run by thier own servers.

So all of the 3rd party apps are going to die on June 30 since they no longer have API access. And reddit has come out publicly and said, "tough shiat, we're doing it this way."

Myself along with lots of 3rd party app users are abandoning the platform entirety once the apps stop working.

I don't know where to go. It's really where I find a lot of news, local stuff going on, keeping track of what's happening in other markets (Vegas, Virginia, etc), and of course the Pr0n.

I think the WiFi antenna / circuit in the bedroom Roku is dying. Nothing has changed in more than a year. The AP is still 25ft away, the Roku is still taped to the same spot on the back of the TV. All of a sudden it went from a 60Mbps connection to a 2Mbps connection. I moved it a foot closer to the AP by shifting it on the back of the TV. It went up to 30Mbps and then immediately back down to 3Mbps.

I need to get the cat cables up here and do it right. But I have to clean out the garage.

Which requires the basement to be ufckING FINISHED.

I'm frustrated. In lots of ways.

First one from the 80's was a horrible slog. And I liked it as a kid (hence the name). The 2000 Sci-Fi Channel miniseries was truer to the books, but had too much of a stage play feel to it. Which makes sense because they were going for practical stage lighting effects with many scenes.
2021's Pt 1 is probably the best portrayal of the book. The confusion of Paul and his arrogance as a 15 year old child are well portrayed by Chalet. Chani is a non-character in Pt 1, which is fine as they only had about 15 min to introduce her with where they broke the movie, but they did capitalize on Zendaya playing her too much. And as much hate as we give breaking movies nowadays, this was the right decision.

It's hard to go into why it's a good adaptation without a 5000 word essay, but go watch it. Understand this is a political intrigue story set in a sci-fi feudal system, and not a Buck Rodgers action piece.
This is an excellent summary. When the first movie came out I was afraid thy would screw up the sand worms but they screwed up everything else instead;)

We ran ethernet for the entertainment center and it's been nice having that load off the wifi.

Even with fiber, the Airties wifi nodes are a huge bottleneck.

i was honestly hoping reddit was fully dead today

a man can dream
Is it a shiat hole? Yes.

Is it the place to find the one answer to a really obscure problem? Also yes.

Plus, you're traveling to a new city that you don't know. The local sub is usually full of helpful people who can answer questions.

It certainly has its problems. But it's also very useful.

Yeah. WiFi isn't meant for that constant flow of data. My room is one of the few places in the house that I haven't been able to to run wires to yet. There's a 50ft roll of 2xCAT and a coax coming out of the basement and sitting on top of the fridge for the bedroom. There's just shiat in the way.
