If I’m not mistaken Ford entered Galaxies and Torinos back in the golden age of NASCAR because of the wheelbase requirements. Mustangs were Ford’s entries on the Trans Am circuit. Love those old Boss 302 and Boss 429 ‘Stangs. That new one you’re eyeing is sweet, too, Relentless. After putting the Bronco back together I’d like to get an old Ford car to tinker with.

the mustang 429 was just so they could get the 429 homologated to run in nascar

Honestly haven't read too much into it, but kinda accepting its fate was the same as the cammer, too exotic, too advanced for the time, aka on a playing field gm and mopar couldn't touch so they petitioned to have it banned

‘73. It was once beautiful. Then I discovered the fun of driving over rocks with similar-minded people :)

I'd love an og bronco, just not prepared to pay the price for one
I like my X a ton, too. They are underrated and very capable rigs. It’s just different working with IFS and learning appropriate lines and limits. Plus, I always liked my Bronco because it wasn’t a Jeep. I always liked the Xterra because it wasn’t a Toyota.

the ifs thing is a matter of dick measuring, a lot of people think they need sas on 40's to do what I do ifs on 33's

Yes, ones better than the other in a world of infinite capabilities, but kinda tying into a convo I had the other day with my boss, a bronco raptor a ufcking sick piece of equipment that will out wheel my x at 10x the cost

but am I ever going to run into something limited moab and colorado trails the x won't do, lifted and locked? probably not, yes, the bronco raptor will do the rubicon and my x probably won't, but it doesn't matter because I'm not headed to do the rubicon now am I?

long term tho, when I get to the bronco, I want that to be my infinitely impossible to kill rig, ya know, cause the alaska high way is on the list and I'm sure theres more parts for a 351 ford than there are for a vg33

I also get you on the toyota thing, don't really get why guys go all googly eyed over em, capable reliable rigs, sure, but reliability at the price of power and excitement is how I view them

A v6 with the economy of a v8 and the power of an i4-Toyota, go further
Well I will say that my X does highways way better than my 1983 i4 pu for sure. But man did I love that thing. Most uncomfortable truck ever but unbeatably dependable in the backcountry. Just chugged over everything and was never worried it would break down

What they fail to realize is that 40s on one ton axles has the same ground clearance as 35s on 1/2 ton axles.

If you're not running 42s or 44s, a 14 bolt or Sterling is just an anchor. You can shave them but that's a lot of effort. A 60 isn't awful, but you can build a stronger 9" for the same money thanks to that super low pinion.

And then you're over-built. You don't run the "easy" trails anymore. You tow it 4 hours, twice a year just to break it in a rock garden, get drunk at camp and tow it home to sit, untouched for 6 months till the next night-before thrash to get it mobile just to break it again in less than 12hr time.

Then you're like my buddy with the V8 powered, one to YJ on 42s. You wheel your DD 4cyl YJ on 31s with lockers 99% of the time while your $40k trail rig dryrots in the garage.

True dat. A few years of busted parts and dripping fluids when we lived out West taught me there’s a price to be paid for too much fun. Hats of to those guys who bang their way up Clawhammer, but laying under a rig in on a hot afternoon in the desert replacing shattered bits to limp the rig home does not sound personally appealing. These days, if I cannot wheel it on 33 MTs with the near sure expectation of making it home, I’m not going. Ok, probably not going.

I’ve been on the alcan from Vancouver to Alaska north of Dawson city, Yukon. Awesome trip. My friend’s H2 was too much rig. My wife’s stock Outback could have made it with no problem. And been way more comfortable.

I have a rage story from yesterday. I'm still stewing about how much of a ufcking jackass this guy was. For no raisin!

Some random house in some random neighborhood was doing all out Santa stuff. So much so that there was signs for it out at shopping centers.

ufcking limousines and party busses coming down the road. Apparently a big ufcking deal. Was meeting the ex there to see Santa and do the kid hand off. I didn't want to deal with all the cars so I went to the next block and parked on a side street. Was sitting there for about 20 minutes. All of a sudden there's high beam headlights in my face. Thinking it was just somebody being an idiot, I put the visor down and continued to dick off on my phone while waiting. The Heep eventually pulls into a driveway in front of me.

5 minutes later this dude comes walking behind his fence with a ufcking flashlight trained on my face. He was being deliberate. Eventually I stuck my head out of the truck to ask him what his ufcking problem was. He barked at me "who the ufck are you and why are you parked in front of my house?!"

He came out verbally swinging.

I told him I was a private citizen parked on the side of a public street. It was none of his business who I was or why I was there. "I'm sitting here minding my own business and you should try it." He kept the flashlight trained on my face and told me I had "ufcking move away from his house." I told him to go ufck himself. Then I told him I was going to move just so I didn't have to deal with his belligerent ass anymore. "Merry Xmas, you piece of shiat!"

He kept his stupid flashlight trained on me from behind his fence as I drove away until I was a ¼ mile away.

Then I realized it was the jackass in the Heep and he sat there with his high beams on being a dick, not an idiot.

I know where his house is. I feel like being a petty ufck.

Not as much fun when it's after only a few hours of wheeling, several hours dragging a broken hunk to camp and loading it with winches just so you can drive home the next day while your buddies on 33s still wheel for two more days.
but the guys on 33's have to take more beer because they'll be out 2 more days

its give and take
