Steering wheel interchange for a first gen Xterra?

I need a new steering wheel for my '04. Looking for what alternatives I can search for at the junk yard. I'm pretty sure the same vintage Frontier would be the same. Does anyone know if a second gen xterra steering wheel will fit in a first gen? Even if it would fit, I'd imagine the cruise control buttons would be an issue.

I'm not sure if the shaft / spline count is the same between the gens. I wouldn't be surprised if they were, as it would keep manufacturing costs down to have one design for all vehicles where the wheel meets the steering shaft. But I cannot confirm.

That said, you'd also need the clock spring for each vehicle and figure out how to rework it so that the wiring from the new wheel matches what the rest of the truck is expecting. So that'd be a bit of a project.

And you'd also need the airbag and confirm that the airbag wiring is the same. Some use 2 wires, some use 4 wires.

Many years ago I replaced the wheel on my 02 when the rubber started to degrade. I found a leather 1st Gen wheel on eBay and it was a direct swap. Plug and play.

Mine is degrading now. Id like to find a leather one for sure. Ive been watching but they are all hammered.
