Ok guys, here's the deal, we've worked it up, and we know that we're setting up a wheeling event/gathering April 12th-14th.
This IS a cross posted "anyone's welcome" event, original thread where it gained life can be found (HERE).
There are no vehicle restrictions, Nissans, Jeeps, other vehicles, whatever, we're not being prejudiced, however, we do request that you be respectful of others.
Details:
Canadian River OHV (north of Amarillo, TX)
April 12th-14th (you can pull in as early as you like, I'll be taking off from the 10th-16th for setup/cleanup)
Requirements:
* A vehicle to wheel (or a previously reached agreement with another driver to ride along with them)
* Texas OHV Program Sticker
you can buy them in lots of places, but, the sticker is a minimum of $16, and the individual retailer can charge you as much as they like, or you can make it easier on yourself by calling the Texas Parks & Wildlife Customer Service Department at 512-389-8917 and they'll ship it to you directly for $16 (my recommendation is to just make the call, it's MUCH simpler, and, won't cost you anything other than the $16 from my understanding.)
* A place to sleep
* A cooler (or two) for food/drink
* A FULL TANK OF FUEL WHEN YOU LEAVE AMARILLO HEADED TO THE RIVER
Recommendations:
* Tools in the event of breakage (not only yours, there are others here who might need your saving)
* Recovery Tools (a shovel is a MUST, we have a lot of loose sandy material, if you don't bring a shovel, you WILL regret it)
* Alcohol/Beer of choice (if we're having a bonfire, why not plan on enjoying yourself with friends, we will NOT be drinking while wheeling, under any circumstances. If you're caught violating this, you will most likely be asked to leave, as you're putting yourself and everyone around you at risk of injury or death.)
* CB (channel to run on will be designated when we get there, please make sure your CB is functional and tuned)
* Fuel Can: it's never a bad idea to have extra fuel, I can honestly say that if we're wheeling enough that you're worried about fuel before the weekend is over, we probably have a problem.
* Chainsaw (no, not everyone needs one, but, having more than one would be nice if we need to get more wood for the fire)
* A way to charge your personal electronics
* FLASHLIGHTS!
* Chairs
* Water
* Handheld "Walkie Talkie" style radio, preferrably the type that can connect to the full spectrum of channels with the sub channel "privacy channels". I'll have a few, and treat them as backups in case anyone is having CB problems.
VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO NOTE:
The area that we'll be camping in is a national park area, so, firearms are prohibited, unless you're a CHL carrier. This is an absolute, do NOT push your luck here. If you are a CHL carrier, please, send me a PM noting that you are and that you'll have a firearm, for peace of mind and management, as I will be letting the rangers know that we'll be out there having a get together, and making sure they know how to get in touch with me if they have any questions.
Events:
If you've never been to the Canadian River OHV, it's not really a "trails" park, but rather a bunch of smaller obstacles that you can ride around and on. The "trail leaders" will take everyone to an area, lead on a few spots, and then find high ground to park on and bust out camera gear to try to get some awesome pictures of everyone playing, as well as keeping an eye on everything. When everyone gets bored with a certain area, we'll move on to another playground. Everyone's welcome to wander and play, so long as you have a functional CB, since cellular reception will be minimal.
Nightly bonfire/campfire, and at least one night I (dhyde79) will be busting out some awesome chef skills and smoking a few racks of ribs for everyones eating enjoyment.
We're also contemplating potentially doing what's known locally as a "bridge to bridge run" it's about a 30 mile run up the riverbed from the bridge between Amarillo and Dumas, to the bridge just south of Boys Ranch, TX. As far as it goes, the expected timeline is anywhere from 1-8 hours (if it looks to be on the long side of the scale, we'll likely not do it, or, turn around and call no joy, as I personally don't want to spend the whole day doing a mud run from hell and risking breaking anyones rigs.)
Timeline (these are just ballpark ideas, and obviously will be open to being broken):
Friday:
Tentatively, we'll be meeting up at the Big Texan Steak Ranch around "lunch" on Friday to get everyone gathered, if anyone needs a TX OHV Program Sticker we'll hit a motorcycle/quad store up the road from the BT to pick up stickers for anyone that's lacking.
The Big Texan will be for fun, they have an in house brewery, and make their own awesome beers, as well as getting Macland his free prime rib for his birthday. If anyone wants to attempt the steak challenge, we'll be there to cheer you on, but, you're on your own for picking up the tab if you fail.
Friday Afternoon:
SET UP CAMP AND SETTLE IN!
Friday Afternoon/Evening/Night
We'll have some light trails we can run
Saturday morning: bridge to bridge, conditions and desire permitting, otherwise, get started on rock trails and pics...
Saturday: we'll hit some fun rock trails and get pictures of everyone having fun as best as possible. Any of you who are attending that are photographically inclined, let me know please and I'll make sure that you're in good spots for lots of awesome pics if you want them.
Saturday Night: we'll do a big bonfire, I'll do the ribs at that point, and everyone agreeing, we'll do a large potluck style feed for everyone. I may be acquiring a *large* military surplus tent, and if so, we'll have a good spot to put the food, so long as we can find some folding tables to put all of the food out on. if not, no big deal...I'm sure we'll find a way to put it all up...
Sunday: more trails and general fun, lazy day, tear down and head out whenever you need to. I may or may not have to pack up my portion and hit the road by about 5 to make it home, shower, and go to a class at 6:30, or, I may get lucky enough to not have to go.
What I need from all of you who want to attend:
Confirmation that you're attending. I'll maintain a list of who's coming on this post, when you chime in that you'll be coming, I need to know the following.
- Number of vehicles
- Number of campers/trailers
- Number of tents
- Number of Attendees
The reason I need to have this, is because we'll be sectioning off a good sized area for a nice campsite for this, but, we need to make sure we have enough spacing for when we dig the fire pit, as well as making sure we have a big enough fire pit for everyone.
I'll also be providing ribs one of the nights, so, I need a hard count on how many people are coming to make sure I have enough ribs cooking for everyone to enjoy. This being said, the night I do that, I do truly hope that all of you bring something along to go with them, I'm not rich enough to cook a rack per person or per vehicle. If we get above the 15-20 person mark, I *may* have to ask that everyone treat "rib night" as a potluck, and bring something to cook along side them, as I'd like to get to wheel and hang out with everyone instead of spending all day babysitting multiple smoker loads of ribs. I can generally get 4-5 racks in at once, and, the way I cook them takes 2-3 hours on the fast side or 4-5 on the slow side, so, if I have to do two loads, we're talking $100 worth of meat and 10 hours of sitting and tending a smoker, which, I'd like to avoid if possible...
UPDATE: Rib night is officially at potluck levels. Everyone plan on bringing something to cook or serve that night (saturday night?) and we'll all get to enjoy good eats. I'll still plan to do 4-5 full racks of ribs, or however much I can crowd into my smoker and get done in one batch.
UPDATE 2: Added a timeline for potential ideas of what's going on. Also, here are a couple of videos of me crawling a couple of the plateau style climbs, first one I can honestly say, run at your own risk, anything on that rock without going the easy ways (and the one I went wasn't one of them) you run a fairly unpleasant risk of rollover.
Mac, you'll recognize the first one, as you went up it with yours, just not the same way I am in the clip.

second was a trail as I was headed back to check out a campsite, I decided to turn and go cruise up it just as light was starting to fail, the pause is me flipping to low range...

both were shot from my iphone 5 from a suction mount on my dash.
