Shrock vs. concrete barrier @ 35mph

My wife was on call for the weekend and ended up having to in, while it was snowing pretty good (ended up with around 16" at the house). The plows were doing their usual crappy job, so it was slick.

Speed limit is 50mph where she was at, but she was only doing about 35mph or so (she's paranoid about going too fast in a lifted truck, let alone going fast during inclement weather, so I tend to believe her) when the truck started to fishtail in a turn. She said she was pointed at the right guard rail, which atop a 30' ravine with a creek at the bottom (where others have punched through and landed at the bottom) and she panicked. Steering hard left, I'm assuming a massive over-correction, she gave it gas (in 4Hi), she gained traction, the truck spun around to the left, she hit the brakes and pounded the hell out of the concrete divider in the middle of the highway.

Of course, since she's the nurse on duty for the emergency calls for the weekend, she got the thing straightened out and kept going to work.

This is what I see when she gets home.

I'm thinking the frame may be OK, but the core support is pushed back (from what I can tell, I can't get the hood open without extreme measures and the insurance company hasn't seen it yet, so I'm not doing that), the inner fender is pushed back (hoping it buckled and didn't push the firewall back), the outer fender is shoved back (but it's buckled, barely missing the door), the body mount is tilted back at the forward most position on the left and the Shrock is tilted back. The bumper sheered two of the grade 8 bolts, hitting the hood, etc., and took the brunt of the hit. I'm thinking if the stock bumper where there, the airbags may have gone off, but can't say for sure that would have happened.

Here's the damage.

She's OK, that's the important thing. Insurance will figure things out. But this X took a lickin' and keeps on tickin'. Although airplanes may try to land on it if the lights are on.

That's the price we pay for living above 7000 ft. Our family wouldn't trade it for anything. Glad she's ok.

Also glad that she takes her job so seriously... a lot of us knuckleheads would be much worse off without people like her.

Man I sure am glad she is okay. Glad to hear she can drive in the snow too. If it threatens snow here people panic

Damn. Glad she's okay. At that kind of speed it seems that the Shrock did pretty well at protecting what was behind it. A factory setup would have made for a lot more damage from the look of things.

Good to here she's ok. My wife drove into the wall of our garage about a year ago. Shrock gave a little but the garage wall and door had to be replaced. Great product just a shame on the wait time.

Glad she's ok as well, now do you feel like the shrock did its job or are you disappointed in how it help up? Not looking for a shrock bashing just a honest answer... I'm surprised it bent back that far

Glad to hear she's ok, that's what's important. At 35mph, with a stock bumper, I'm pretty confident the air bags would have gone off. 35 into a concrete barrier is a hell of a hit.

Sorry to see the X get banged up, but again; very glad to hear your wife is alright.

Initially I was surprised at the damage that it caused. But when I looked closer and saw the grade 8 bolts sheered through, with the threads imprinted into the bracket itself, I realized that it took one helluva hit to do all that. And that the amount of energy that it took to move all of that and still not set off the air bags is actually impressive.

I'm happy that the Shrock was on there. I'm glad that it took the brunt of it and left the vehicle driveable with her safe. If I had to do it all again, I would, without hesitation. Shrock for her, custom for me. As long as she's safe, I'll spend the money.

She talks to the insurance company tomorrow and we'll have it looked at within the week. Hopefully it doesn't take too long to get fixed.
