Repetitive question

I have a 2004 XE and I want to put 32 inch tires on it. My question is what is the optimal backspacing I would need on 16 inch wheels to avoid trimming metal. Bear in mind that these wheels and tires will be paired with a 3 inch Calmini suspension lift.

Stock is -5.5 Rattfink has a -5.0 on his

I think 5.0 is perfect for a good DD and cool looking Xterra ;)

4.75 is max.. Event then you might have to trim the plastic behind the front tires.. Nothing drastic.. Just the lip on it

perfect fit?

In doing my research I discoverd the vital importance of backspacing when choosing a wheel and tire combination. With that in mind I searched for days to find a set of Granite Wheels GV6 in a 16x8 with a backspacing just under 5.5. If memory serves me correct the backspacing is 5.38 on those wheels.
Now, my plans are to install a Calmini 3'' suspension lift and mount 33'' tires on the above mentioned wheels. My question here is will that backspacing be sufficent enough to avoid any heavy trimming and beating, and will a body lift be necessary?

I ran 32s (265/75-16) on my stock wheels with 5.5 backspacing with no rubbing at all and no lift. When I went to Granite Alloy GA9 wheels with 4.78 backspacing they rubbed a lot on the bottom part of the front bumper cover and just barely touched a small area on the very inside of the lower corner plastic behind the front wheels, just where the mud flaps used to be. I trimmed the front just short of where the little metal brace attaches and cut off the small part behind the wheel and that was all that was needed, still with no lift. I think I might have pictures of that on my built thread if you want to have a look. Now that I have the RLC bumper of course there is no clearance issues at all on that end. One thing to keep in mind with a suspension lift is that unlike a body lift, if the suspension compresses all the way to the bump stops while turning the tire will be in the same place as before the lift. It will just be a lot harder to get the suspension to compress that far unless you remove the front sway bar. I plan to do a three inch suspension lift as well and will be going to 33s (285/75-16) when I do. One option if you do have any contact after the lift would be to install slightly bigger bump stops to limit the up travel. MechPatt587 just got some nice new 33s on his X with a suspension lift and at full lock they rub a little on the frame on stock wheels so I think he's looking to get some new wheels with around 4.5 to 4.75 backspacing soon.

Refering to the original post, thanks for the information. It seems that the plan I have should work out fine after a suspension lift is put on. I will stick with the 32" tires as I don't do a tremendous amount of off road driving. This is mainly being built as a hurricane survival machine, so broken trees and standing water are my chief concerns. The build, however is not going to get started until tater this year as I will be working out of town for a while. Lets just say I'm going to a place where American's aren't very popular and the people talk with lots of phlem.

Wheel spacers would indeed solve the problem but Charles has found a nice set of wheels he really wants so we'll have to make up some excuse for why spacers won't work on his particular Xterra. If you're keeping your stock wheels you should be fine before the lift and certainly have no issues with the lift.

I'm going with Granite GV6 wheels which are just a touch under factory backspacing on a 16x9 wheel. Essentially its the same wheel and doing the math
i see little to no risk in doing this exchange. As for Charles tell him to use the Everest excuse. That excuse is why buy the wheels? Because they were there:)

The travel agent did mention there would be plenty of sand around. The agent also mentioned that the indigenous people there are extremely proficient in the use of pyortechnics and are always eager to share this knowledge with "out of towners". I have to say that the trip sounds inviting and I can't understand why this place isn't a vacation destination for the masses yet:)

I'd place bets that I've been in your destination a few times, and, I recommend a nice scope for your hunting rifle, the indigenous wildlife is mysterious and very good at hiding amongst the native terrain. Good luck at snagging your daily bag limit safely.

According to the game warden there, there is no daily limit to what I can bag. I have a scope that can see through time on my hunting rifle. My guess is that you have been there a few times since you know the mysterious ways of the local wildlife.
Enough about my travel plans, and back to more important matters:) Once I do the the lift would you recommend I upgrade the steering components as well to accomidate the larger tires?

Idler Arm Brace (IAB) at the VERY least. I'm still running stock steering components with my 32s, but it makes me nervous to wheel it too much without at least an IAB.
